The Northern Surveyors Forum Holds 2025 Annual General Meeting and J.D.J. Dashe Memorial Lecture in Yola

The 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Northern Surveyors Forum commenced 4th December and scheduled to end today, 7th December at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Yola. This year’s AGM, themed “Bringing on the New: Geospatial Applications in Governance,” brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and professionals to discuss strategies for advancing Nigeria’s geospatial and surveying sectors.

In his address, Chief Dr. Edgar Sunday, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Adamawa State, who represented the Governor of Yola State, stated that, “We are expanding infrastructure, improving GIS capacity, strengthening physical planning, and promoting sustainable development across our towns and cities. As Surveyors, you are not only professionals—you are partners in nation-building.”
He emphasized that surveyors play a critical role in ensuring accuracy and supporting the government’s developmental reforms.

Delivering his goodwill message, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, represented by Surv. Olugbemiro Olakunle, Registrar of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON), said; “I congratulate the Chairman of the Northern Surveyors Forum, Surv. Dr. Isah Funtua Abdulkadir, on this special occasion of the AGM. I also commend every member who has come from far and near to make this event a success. It is our hope that the discussions and presentations at this forum will propel the profession toward the transformational shift we all desire.”

In his address, the President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Surv. P.C. Eze, described the late Surv. J.D.J. Dashe as a beacon of integrity and intellectual excellence whose legacy continues to inspire surveyors nationwide. He said that “Geospatial application in governance is remarkable, as we are living in a time where governance is no longer guesswork but driven by precision. As Nigeria grapples with the complexities of resource management and national security, the solution lies in the wealth of geospatial intelligence. Geospatial intelligence is the bedrock of modern governance.”

The AGM and the memorial lecture addressed critical challenges facing the surveying sector, including technological gaps and outdated practices, while exploring solutions to enhance the quality of geospatial data for effective decision-making. Stakeholders reaffirmed the vital role of geospatial information in governance, infrastructure development, environmental management, and disaster resilience. The AGM emphasized the necessity of innovation, inclusiveness, and sustained investment in the geospatial sector to meet the demands of the 21st century.

OSGoF Strengthens National Boundary Mapping Capacity through Intensive GNSS and Total Station Training

The Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF) has commenced a hands-on technical training sponsored by German International Cooperation (GIZ) for the Gambia government in Banjul, The Gambia. The training which aimed at strengthening national capacity for accurate Boundary Delimitation, Demarcation, and Reaffirmation began yesterday. It focuses on equipping participants with practical skills in the use of modern survey instruments, including Handheld GPS units, Total Stations, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers operating in both Static and Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) modes.

The training was led by Surveyor Adegboye Babajide, an Assistant Director in OSGoF and a highly experienced GNSS specialist, who guided participants through comprehensive technical sessions covering boundary point navigation, route tracking, and advanced setting-out procedures. He noted that the first day provided foundational exposure to the operation of handheld GPS devices which is used for navigation and route documentation. Surveyor Olufemi’s wealth of experience was instrumental in delivering the high quality practical training.

Furthermore, he stated that field activities continued with practical demonstrations near designated border areas, where participants applied their classroom knowledge to real-life scenarios. Other activities carried out were the successful boundary point stakeout using GNSS in RTK mode, static observations of demarcated survey points, use of Total Stations for precise setting-out from established approach points, deployment of Handheld GPS for field navigation and boundary verification. Surv. Olufemi confirmed that the field exercise was highly successful as the participants’ demonstrated improved competence in modern boundary demarcation techniques.

The Surveyor General of the Federation commended the team for their professionalism and reaffirmed OSGoF’s commitment to continuous capacity development to support national mapping, secure boundary management, and accurate geospatial data production for national development.

This training underscores OSGoF's commitment to leveraging technology and expertise for accurate territorial definition and security. The capacity building initiative is anchored by African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST) in conjunction with OSGOF as co-facilitator on behalf of GIZ.
