RT. HON. BARR. SUNDAY CYRIACUS UMEHA FELCITATES CONSTITUENTS AND NIGERIA CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY, AT EASTER

5th April, 2026

For Immediate Release

On behalf of myself and my family, I wish to felicitate the Good People of Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency, in particular and the Nigerian Christian Community, in general on the occasion of the Feast of Easter. This season which we commemorate today, starting from the memorable events of Good Friday, represents arguably the most consequential event in all of history. Chris's crucifixion, death on the cross and resurrection is a foundation of the Christian faith. By triumphing over death, God Almighty distinguished His only Begotten Son from the rest of humanity and guaranteed the eternal hope and promise of Christianity. Through his death and resurrection, we're assured of the presence of light at every tunnel through the virtues of hope, sacrifice and perseverance.

As we rejoice in the glory of His resurrection at this Easter, I urge all of us to rededicate ourselves to Christ's legacy and to use this moment as a springboard of our Christian faith, through prayer and fasting and imitation of the stellar examples of Christ's life on earth.

Once again, I wish us a Happy and Reflective Easter.

Signed:

Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha
Member Representing Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency & Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Justice.

NEW YEAR ADDRESS BY RT. HON. BARR. SUNDAY CYRIACUS UMEHA

Umunnem Ndi Udi N' Ezeagu,

I bring you warm greetings and heartfelt goodwill as we step into a new year : 2026. On behalf of myself and members of my family, I give thanks to Almighty God for His grace, protection, and mercy that saw us through the past year and has granted us the privilege of witnessing this new beginning together.

The year 2025, came with its share of challenges and opportunities. Despite economic headwinds, insecurity and social concerns, our people demonstrated remarkable resilience, unity, and determination. I am deeply proud of the patience, strength, and hope shown by us during this period.

As your representative in the Federal House of Representatives, I remain committed to advancing your interests through effective legislation, oversight, and advocacy. Over the past year, efforts were made to attract federal interventions, support community development, empower our youths and women, and amplify the voice of our constituency at the national level. While more work remains, I assure you that your concerns continue to guide every step I take.

In this new year, my focus will remain on:

Promoting people-oriented policies that improve livelihoods:

Supporting education, skills acquisition, and youth empowerment;

Advocating for improved infrastructure and rural development;

Strengthening peace, security, and community cohesion and

Ensuring transparent and accountable representation, amongst others.

I therefore, call on all stakeholders—traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women groups, and professionals—to continue working together in unity. Indeed, sustainable development can only be achieved when we put aside divisions and embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and collective responsibility.

To our youths, you are the strength and future of this constituency. I encourage you to remain hopeful, law-abiding, innovative, and committed to building a better society. To our women, your contributions to family, community, and economic growth are invaluable, and you will continue to receive my support and advocacy.

Umunnem, as we journey through this new year, let us renew our commitment to peace, hard work, and service to one another. Together, we can build an Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency that reflects our shared values of integrity, progress, and compassion.

May this new year bring good health, prosperity, and renewed hope to every home. May our constituency and our dear country, Nigeria, experience peace, growth, and lasting development.

Happy New Year, and God bless you all.

Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, Member Representing Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency| Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Justice.

RT. HON. BARR. SUNDAY CYRIACUS UMEHA CALLS FOR CALM AMIDST THE CONVICTION OF MAZI NNAMDI KANU, ASSURES NDIGBO OF CONSTRUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT TOWARDS A POLITICAL SOLUTION.

For Immediate Release

25th November, 2025

Like many Nigerians, and Ndi Igbo in particular, I have followed with great concern the reactions that have trailed the conviction and sentence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu- Leader of the Indeginious People of Biafra (IPOB) by a Federal High Court presided over by Hon. Justice James Omotosho, last Thursday, 20th November, 2025.

As a lawyer and Igbo Man, I followed the proceedings that eventually culminated in the Judgement last Thursday. Let me state unequivocally that, as a member of the legal profession and Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Justice, it is incumbent on me to underscore that irrespective of the misgivings one may have against the judgment, it must be respected as the verdict of a Court of competent jurisdiction. This is without prejudice, however, to the right of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to appeal the decision to the next level of judicial inquiry. It is thus gratifying that steps are being taken to approach the Court of Appeal for a judicial review. This is the only lawful and constitutional means to address legitimate grievances with the verdict of a lower Court.

The Nnnamdi-Kanu Question as I often call it, is not one whose answer can be found in the arid legalism of adjudication. I have always held the view that it is a specie of social crisis most suitable to a resolution through the weapons of social advocacy, namely, dialogue, compromise and justice.

At the face level, Nnamdi Kanu'a agitations before it assumed criminal dimensions, resonated and still resonates deeply with the age-long feelings of marginalization by the Igbo within Nigeria, a situation that had led to years of exclusionary policies which have aggregated to retrogress the growth and development of the South East, and the Igbo at large. It should not be surprising therefore, that it won many converts and drew sympathies from the Igbo; both at home and in the Diaspora.

Whilst this analysis is not in anyway intended to justify the mass killings and destruction of lives and properties allegedly attributed to the IPOB group and their ESN-wing, it is nonetheless necessary to situate the crisis at its sociological level to frame the thrust of this intervention.

Against this backdrop therefore, I want to reiterate my advocacy over the years for a politically negotiated resolution of the Nnamdi-Kanu Question through dialogue, compromise and concession as that appears to me, the only way to resolve the crisis in a manner that restores the South East to its now disappearing heritage of peace and communal living. It goes without saying that, this move, must be championed by Igbo Leaders and in this regard, I take encouragement in the steps being taken by the South East Caucus of the 10th National Assembly, as well as other stakeholders of the Igbo Nation, to open a window of discussion with the Federal Government towards a potential presidential pardon for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on terms that will be a win-win for all the parties concerned.

Let me be clear that this option must be seen, not just as a gesture of peace, but one that must be considered in the larger interest of National security; which is the raison de etere of government. And I am hopeful that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration might see it too, as an act which would come to be seen in the future as a moment of significant importance in our March through Nationhood.

In the meantime, I want to appeal to The Igbo and to the friends and families of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to remain peaceful, calm and law abiding in line with the characteristic spirit and comportment of our people, whilst steps are being explored, both within and outside the Court Room, to bring about an outcome that best reflects the South East and Nigeria of our shared aspiration.

Signed

Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha
Member Representing Ezeagu-Udi Federal Constituency, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Justice.

*Requiem for a Quintessential Gentleman*

Today, the 19th day of November 2025, will forever remain one of the darkest and most painful days in the political history of Enugu State, and indeed in the hearts of all who knew, admired, and respected the distinguished Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial Zone in the 10th Senate until the unfortunate news of his passing. The devastating news of the demise of Senator Ideke has left me, like many others, in profound grief and disbelief. It is difficult to accept that a man of such courage, humility, intellect, and uncommon patriotism has been taken away from us at a time when his leadership, wisdom, and strength were still deeply needed.

My relationship with Senator Ezea was one built on mutual respect, genuine admiration, and an unshakable belief in the shared dream of a greater Enugu State. Long before fate brought us into positions of public trust, I knew him to be a man of sincerity and conviction—a man who stood firmly for justice, equity, and service to the people. In all my interactions with Senator Ezea, he remained consistent in character: calm but firm, compassionate yet principled, humble but strong, and always guided by a clear vision for the welfare of his people. To me, Senator Ezea was not only a colleague but a brother, a guide, and an example of what leadership should be.

His death is not just a personal loss, but a monumental loss to Enugu State, the10th National Assembly, and to the entire nation.

Senator Okey Ezea’s contributions at the Senate stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the people of Enugu North and Nigeria at large. His voice on the floor of the Senate floor was powerful, articulate, and always rooted in truth. He spoke not for political gain but for the collective good of his people and the nation. He championed laws and motions that prioritized the welfare if the people, infrastructure, security, education, economic and rural developments.

As I mourn him today, my heart is heavy, yet full of gratitude that our paths crossed in this lifetime. I am grateful for his brotherhood, his mentorship, and the shared moments of visioning a better Enugu. Whilst his passing has created a vacuum, his values, principles, and dreams will continue to guide those who had the privilege of working with him.

To the people of Enugu North Senatorial Zone, I extend my deepest condolences. We have lost a hero, a defender, and a voice that stands firm always. But even in death, his contributions remain alive—in the bills he supported, the projects he secured, the lives he shaped, and the hope he inspired.

I pray that God Almighty will receive his gentle soul and grant his family the fortitude to be this irreparable loss.
