N774 - ETHIOPIA-NIGERIA LEADERSHIP EXCHANGE: MOVING THE NEEDLE ON NUTRITION

Implementation and Achievements Brief Ethiopia-Nigeria Leadership Exchange: Moving the Needle on Nutrition Addis Ababa, 7–9 October 2026

“Through this initiative, every mother and child — regardless of their location — will have access to lifesaving nutrition interventions tailored to their unique needs.” — H.E. Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Launch of Nutrition 774, 148th National Economic Council, 20 February 2025.

N774 OPERATING PRINCIPLE

Through a top-down support, bottom-up action, driven by local governance and multi-sectoral collaboration, N774 aims to empower communities, foster ownership, and ensure sustainable interventions that enhance maternal and child health, ultimately mitigating food insecurity and malnutrition

WHY IS NIGERIA ACTING NOW?

40% of children under five are stunted (NDHS 2024), up from 37.7% in 2012; the 2030 target is 22.2%.
* Anaemia affects 55.1% of women aged 15–49.
* Low birthweight has risen to 14.2%.
* Exclusive breastfeeding is 28.7%, below the 2012 baseline of 35%.
* Only 16% of children were weighed in the last 3 months.
* Off-track on 4 of 6 World Health Assembly targets.
• US$56B estimated annual cost of malnutrition to Nigeria’s economy.
• 45% of under-five deaths are linked to malnutrition.
• 11% potential boost to per-capita GDP from successful nutrition investment.

WHAT NUTRITION 774 IS, AND WHAT IT IS NOT

A national governance and accountability framework, not a service-delivery programme. Launched in February 2025 by H.E. Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, at the 148th National Economic Council (NEC).
N774 is the flagship initiative of the National Council on Nutrition (NCN) which H.E. Vice President Kashim Shettima chairs.
It drives the National Policy on Food and Nutrition and its Multi-sectoral Plan of Action through one accountable chain, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
774 LGAs in 36 states + FCT
5 interlocking pillars
1 shared accountability system

*NIGERIA AT 66: ALGON NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE*

As our great nation marks 66 years of independence, I congratulate all Nigerians at home and abroad. Today reminds us of the courage of our founding fathers, the strength of our diversity, and the resilience of the Nigerian spirit.
Across the country, Nigerians continue to show hope, hard work and unity. I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his exceptional dedication in driving national development, security and economic stability under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
ALGON National President, Engr. Bello Lawal, praised President Tinubu’s support for LGAs as a pathway to effective democratic governance. He noted that the long failure of the system, which was a major setback, is now being addressed.
Councils now benefit from vibrant governance beyond paper and policy - a whole ecosystem of service delivery with optimized inclusive human resources at the rural level.
The situation remains most challenging at the LGAs where hunger, insecurity and violence are mostly perpetrated, yet Councils are committed to bringing governance closer to the people.

He thanked the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the 36 State Governors for harmonious relations with sub-nationals. He noted that development across LGAs has engendered peer review, with many Chairmen deepening research to deliver their manifestos and campaign promises.
He appreciates the Green and Red Chambers of the National Assembly, State Assemblies, the Judiciary for its jurisprudence, and law enforcement agencies for safeguarding law and order.
He commends the Press, Civil Society and all local government-friendly groups, especially for their advocacy and campaign for Council autonomy.

*Happy Independence Day, Nigeria at 66.*
*May God bless our nation.*

He commends the Press, Civil Society and all local government-friendly groups, especially for their advocacy and campaign for Council autonomy.

He urges caution and love during electioneering, so that politicians connect with the wishes of the people and constituents better understand candidates' plans.

ALGON will continue to align with the SDGs to ensure fiscal discipline complements the budget framework. Our concern is effective governance and national development with footprints the masses can feel. Across the 774 LGAs and Area Councils, government's sacrifices are being felt and the rural gap is closing.

Challenges of insecurity, banditry, poor rural infrastructure and economic hardship remain, but as an umbrella body we will keep reviewing our successes for performance improvement.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria at 66.
May God bless our nation.

ALGON PARTICIPATES IN STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING FOR COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH WORKERS TRAINING ROLLOUT

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), under the leadership of its National President, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, participated in a three-day strategic planning and alignment meeting organized by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) under the Community Health Workforce Program (CHWP).
The meeting, held from 21–23 September 2026 at Bon Octagon Hotel, Jahi, Abuja, focused on developing state-specific training plans, budgets, supervision strategies, and rollout roadmaps for the upcoming 12-day Community-Based Health Workers (CBHW) Training across selected states and the FCT.
The initiative, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, aims to train and upskill 44,000 Community-Based Health Workers across 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory, using the redesigned National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) curriculum.
This effort is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system and improve access to quality healthcare services at the grassroots.
Recognizing ALGON’s critical role in community mobilization and local government coordination, MSH invited the ALGON National President, State ALGON Chairmen (or their representatives) from the participating states, and the ALGON National Health Desk Technical Lead/National Coordinator to contribute to the planning process.
The meeting provided a platform for national, state, and development partners to harmonize implementation strategies, define roles and responsibilities, establish timelines, and ensure that the training rollout responds to the unique needs of each participating state.
ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen primary healthcare delivery and build a skilled community health workforce capable of improving health outcomes across Nigeria.
