From January 26th - 30th, 2026, we participated in the activation of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Innovation Initiative (MAMII) in Rivers State.
Representing our team, Bello Danyaya presented on NEMSAS’s critical role in ensuring pregnant women have rapid access to emergency medical care when they need it most. The presentation highlighted innovative solutions for transporting expectant mothers and newborns during medical emergencies, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities where timely intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
As a key implementing partner, NEMSAS is committed supporting the MAMII project in improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes through strategic emergency response interventions across Nigeria.

Strengthening Emergency Response in Riverine Communities
The National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), with support from The World Bank IMPACT Project, has delivered specialized boat ambulances to Rivers State as part of a nationwide initiative to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.
Our team, led by National Programme Manager, Dr. Doubra Emuren, was on ground to officially hand over two of six boat ambulances to the state, marking a critical milestone in improving emergency medical services for hard-to-reach riverine communities. We were warmly received by the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, Dr. Adaeze Oreh and her team, alongside Dr. Amina Abdul, World Bank IMPACT Project.
Ahead of the February launch, Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh led an inspection of the emergency boats to assess operational readiness. These ambulances will provide life-saving critical care and rapid transportation to anyone requiring urgent medical attention in areas where conventional ambulance services cannot reach.
Across Nigeria, geography should never determine survival. NEMSAS is committed to bridging the healthcare gap in underserved riverine communities, ensuring that everyone has access to timely, quality emergency care.
This initiative reinforces our vision of a Nigeria where distance is no longer a barrier to emergency life-saving interventions.

NEMSAS REINFORCES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FRSC
The Management of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), led by National Programme Manager, Dr. Emuren Doubra, recently held a high-level strategic meeting with the leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), headed by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, at the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja.
Discussions focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership between NEMSAS and the FRSC by improving communication channels, enhancing response times, and fostering better coordination between NEMSAS headquarters, state offices, and FRSC emergency personnel.
This collaboration remains essential given the FRSC’s national mandate to manage all federal roads and ensure safety across Nigeria. Under the existing Memorandum of Understanding, NEMSAS utilizes FRSC ambulances strategically positioned along major highways to provide rapid response to road traffic accidents.
Through this partnership, road accident victims can dial the emergency toll-free line 112 to receive immediate first-response medical care at no cost. They are then transported to the nearest health facility for further treatment, a critical intervention that helps save lives during the crucial first minutes after an incident.
As part of the broader restructuring of emergency medical services nationwide, these collaborative efforts ensure expanded coverage and improved survival rates for emergency cases on Nigerian roads.

Last month, we convened a general staff meeting to formally welcome Dr. Emuren Doubra as our new National Program Manager.
During the meeting, Dr. Emuren reaffirmed NEMSAS’ vision, mission, and core values, emphasizing the program’s unwavering commitment to restructuring emergency medical service delivery nationwide.
A key highlight was the comprehensive review of achievements from Q1 through Q3, followed by strategic alignment of priorities for Q4. This reflective discussion ensured that all team members remain focused on NEMSAS’ national objectives and operational standards as the year draws to a close.
NEMSAS continues to strengthen emergency medical response across Nigeria through improved accessibility, elevated service quality, and interventions that align with our mission of delivering timely, efficient, and patient-centered emergency care.
