SECURITY AWARENESS

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Akwa Ibom State Command, has successfully uncovered and dismantled an illicit security outfit operating as 'Uniquely Network Rescue Services' in Uyo. Following credible intelligence, NSCDC operatives conducted a raid on the group's training camp, arresting several members, including the state coordinator. During the operation, uniforms, training manuals, membership forms, and wooden rifles utilized for unauthorized paramilitary training were confiscated. Investigations revealed that the organization allegedly recruited youths under false pretenses, collected membership fees, and operated without requisite government approval or NSCDC licensure.

The group purportedly claimed affiliation with international bodies to attract unsuspecting Nigerians. This development serves as a stark reminder to the public, particularly young individuals and parents, to exercise vigilance and verify the legitimacy of any security, paramilitary, or recruitment organization prior to joining.

Security is a collective responsibility. Report suspicious activities, illegal training camps, and unauthorized groups to the relevant security agencies. Collectively, we can safeguard our communities and prevent exploitation of innocent citizens. Remain alert, informed, and secure.

REBUTTAL: ALLEGED ROBBERY OF INMATE(S) AT KUJE CUSTODIAL CENTRE

The Nigerian Correctional Service notes with concerns, media reports online, alleging that an inmate(s) at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, was robbed of personal valuables reportedly valued at over ₦120 million during a routine search operation conducted within the facility.

The Service wishes to categorically state that the allegation is false, misleading, and inconsistent with the operational realities and established procedures governing custodial facilities in the country.

For the avoidance of doubt, what took place at the Custodial Centre in Kuje, was a routine security search carried out within the facility and all recovered prohibited items were dully processed and documented. The exercise was conducted professionally and in line with extant Standard Operating Procedures aimed at maintaining security, order, discipline, and the integrity of custodial operations.

The Nigerian Correctional Service operates under clearly defined regulations which prohibit inmates from keeping personal unauthorized items and large sums of money while in custody. Upon admission into any custodial facility, all personal belongings and valuables declared by inmates are properly documented, recorded, and kept in safe custody until discharge or lawful release.

Available records from the custodial centre do not indicate that the items mentioned in the reports were declared by the inmate(s) upon admission, neither were such items found or recorded during the search operation. Consequently, there is no official record supporting the allegation that the said prohibited valuables were in the custody of the inmate(s) within the facility.

It is also important to state that the items allegedly mentioned are classified as prohibited contraband within custodial centres, and inmates are not permitted to retain them in personal possession. Any unauthorized introduction or possession of such items within a custodial facility constitutes a breach of custodial regulations.

Furthermore, as at the time of this statement, no formal or informal complaint of theft or loss relating to the alleged items has been lodged by the said inmate, or any other inmate, or persons in the Centre, nor through the available official complaint channels of the Service.

The Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje is calm, peaceful and secured.

The Service therefore urges the public and media organisations to refrain from circulating sensational and unverified claims capable of misleading the public and undermining confidence in public institutions. Media correspondents are encouraged to seek clarification through appropriate official channels in the interest of fairness, accuracy, and responsible journalism.

The Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring the safety and welfare of inmates and sustaining ongoing reforms and security measures introduced by the Controller General of Corrections to strengthen professionalism, transparency, and accountability across custodial centres nationwide.

3-Years of Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration already and Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo continues to create and reach record milestones in the Ministry of Interior.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in Immigration reforms: cleared 200k+ passport backlogs in 3 weeks. Added e-passport facilities in Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria & Switzerland. Launched NIS Mobile app for contactless biometric registration. Waiting 6 months for a passport? That era is over.

NSCDC VOLUNTEER SCHEME

Volunteering with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) involves assisting the agency with community policing, disaster management, emergency response, and critical infrastructure protection. While active service is typically handled by regular officers, the NSCDC periodically utilizes civilian volunteers and community policing schemes to help tackle crises.

Roles of an NSCDC Volunteer

If engaged, your civic duties would generally include:
1. Assisting with crowd control and traffic management during large gatherings.

2. Providing first aid and rescue services during natural disasters (like floods).

3. Gathering intelligence at the grassroots level and reporting suspicious activities to regular officers.

4. Helping at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and relief centers

Important Considerations for NSCDC Volunteers

Recruitment vs. Volunteering: It is important to know that serving as a volunteer may not guarantee automatic absorption into the regular, salaried NSCDC workforce.
