Off-cycle elections provide a real-time look at how democracy works, how information shapes public opinion, and how citizens engage with the political process. With young people playing an increasingly influential role, Ekiti offers important lessons on participation, accountability, and the future of democratic engagement in Nigeria.

Ahead of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election, the EU-SDGN programme is supporting efforts to strengthen electoral peace and citizen-led monitoring through the training of field observers on Early Warning and Early Response (EWER), compliance monitoring, and reporting.

Bringing together observers from all 30 LGAs in Osun State, the training is equipping participants with the skills to identify and report electoral risks, monitor Peace Accord commitments, and support timely responses that promote peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections.

What do citizens really think about political party manifestos and campaign promises ahead of the Osun Governorship Election?

Through the Independent Broadcast Voter Opinion Lab, the EU-SDGN programme is supporting a platform where citizens from diverse backgrounds can critically assess party manifestos, identify governance priorities, and contribute to issue-based electoral discourse.

By amplifying citizen voices through broadcast media, the initiative seeks to strengthen voter awareness, promote informed participation, and encourage greater accountability in the electoral process.

Warm Eid greetings to our Muslim stakeholders, partners, colleagues, and friends across Nigeria.

As families and communities come together in celebration, the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) reflects on the values of sacrifice, peace, kindness, and solidarity that define this season.

These values also strengthen democracy through peaceful coexistence, inclusion, mutual respect, and active civic participation.

Eid Mubarak!

Ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for 20 June, candidates of 13 political parties, alongside their party chairmen, signed a peace accord in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, to promote credible and violence-free polls.

The National Peace Committee (NPC), with support from the European Union through our programme, EU-SDGN, facilitated the signing of the peace accord to reinforce a peaceful and credible electoral process.

As we witnessed the candidates commit to peace, we are hopeful that this public display of political accommodation and tolerance will reflect in the conduct of their supporters, helping to prevent violence during and after voting.

We remain committed to supporting and promoting peaceful elections in Nigeria because we believe in a free, fair, credible, and peaceful process that strengthens democracy through the ballot.

We are proud to be part of this important democratic milestone in Ekiti State and Nigeria as a whole.

Ahead of the Ekiti governorship election, we strengthened the capacity of INEC officials with fact-checking expertise, digital intelligence, and media monitoring skills to support a credible electoral process.

Through this engagement, participants explored strategies for countering fake news, AI-driven manipulation, and harmful electoral narratives that threaten public trust.

Together, we are reinforcing resilience against misinformation and disinformation in the electoral space because credible elections depend on informed citizens, accurate information, and institutional preparedness.
