ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The National Visual Art Competition was initiated by the National Gallery of Art, a parastal of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation in 2008 as an annual event. The competition is geared towards discovering, nurturing and consolidating on artistic expression and enhance community education and awareness of art as well as encourage a much deeper le
vel of commitment from art students alike to express their creative ideas towards developing their own artwork. The National Visual Art Competition has attracted a multitude of entries from all over Nigeria. Its success was marked by increasing number of entries and participating states of the federation. More than 250 entries were received in 2008, over 500 entries in 2009, while 870 entries were received in 2010. Topical issues are usually chosen as themes and sub-theme for participants to produce their works; eminent Nigerians as well as stakeholders in the Nigeria project are selected to chair the event. The first edition was chaired by the former deputy chairman, Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism ,Sentor Yisa Braimoh, with the theme ‘’ Envisioning a New Nigeria through Visual Art’’. The second edition had the theme ‘’ Rebranding Nigeria Through Visual Art’’ was chaired by Late Professor Dora Akunyili, then Honourable Minister for Information and Communication, while the 2010 edition had as its theme ‘’ Electoral Reform as Ethics for Good Governance’’ with Professor Attahiru Jega as Chairman.
