🚨 UPDATE

> "We are providing incentives to farmers to increase food production at affordable prices. I have ordered that tariffs and import duties be removed from rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, drugs, and other pharmaceutical supplies for the next 6 months."
>
> 🎙 PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU

As you may recall, I requested the president to make such a statement months ago, emphasizing the urgent need for action on food security. It is commendable to see steps being taken in this direction.

However, amidst the current protests demanding a reduction in pump prices, I am disappointed by the president's response, which seems less strategic than expected. This has led me to suspect that those advising Mr. President may not have the best interests of the nation at heart.

It is alarming to see daily reports of citizens being killed and criminals exploiting the tense situation to harm innocent people. The public has clearly expressed their need for a reduction in pump prices. As a leader, it is crucial to act decisively and address the pressing concerns of the nation.

Considering this, I believe the president should have delivered his address as follows to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property:

Proposed Presidential Address:

Fellow Citizens,

In light of the ongoing challenges and as your president committed to serving you, I recognize the need to take immediate action to alleviate your concerns. Therefore, I am announcing an immediate directive for all filling stations to reduce the pump price to N100 per liter, effective immediately. This price adjustment will be subsidized by the government for the next 12 months. During this period, we are committed to implementing necessary measures to ensure a smooth transition away from subsidies without causing undue hardship.

Rest assured, my administration is determined to relieve you of the current burdens imposed by our policies. At the end of this one-year subsidy period, our country will have the necessary infrastructure, including CNG plants, to sustainably manage fuel distribution and prices.

Additionally, I am instructing all security operatives to ensure compliance with this directive. Any filling station that fails to adhere to this order will face immediate legal action.

I appreciate your trust and patience during these challenging times. Please continue your daily activities peacefully and avoid any actions that could lead to further unrest.

Thank you for your understanding and support. Together, we will build a nation we can all be proud of.

The Nigerian government closed its land borders in 2019 to prevent the smuggling of rice and other food items, hoping to boost local agricultural production and reduce dependence on imports. However, this policy had rather produce several negative consequences for the economy, the people, and the regional integration.

First, the border closure did not achieve its intended goal of increasing food security and self-sufficiency. Instead, it led to a surge in food prices and inflation, as local farmers could not meet the huge domestic demand. This worsened the living conditions of many Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable, who spend more than half of their income on food.

Second, the border closure disrupted trade and commerce with neighboring countries, such as Benin, Niger, and Cameroon. Many small and medium-sized businesses that relied on cross-border activities lost their livelihoods and markets. This reduced the economic opportunities and growth potential for Nigeria and its partners. It also strained the diplomatic relations and trust among the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Third, the border closure contradicted Nigeria’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which came into effect on January 1, 2021. The AfCFTA aims to create a single market for goods and services, and promote trade liberalization and integration across Africa. By shutting the borders, Nigeria isolated itself from the rest of the continent and missed the opportunity to benefit from the increased trade and investment flows that the AfCFTA could generate.

Therefore, it is imperative that the current government reopens the borders as soon as possible, while addressing the underlying issues that led to the closure in the first place.

This would require strengthening the customs and security agencies, enhancing the quality and competitiveness of local products, and fostering cooperation and dialogue with the neighboring countries. Reopening the borders would not only improve the economic and social welfare of Nigerians, but also demonstrate government leadership and solidarity in advancing the African agenda.

The food hike and hardship that Nigerians are facing is not limited to Minna people only.

According to the UNICEF, nearly 25 million Nigerians are at risk of facing hunger between June and August 2024 if urgent action is not taken.

This is a projected increase from the estimated 17 million people currently at risk of food insecurity. Continued conflict, climate change, inflation and rising food prices are key drivers of this alarming trend.

The people of Minna are not alone in this struggle, and they deserve to have their voices heard and their needs met. However, blocking major roads and throwing stones at government officials may not be the most effective or peaceful way to achieve this goals. Such actions may disrupt the already fragile food supply chains, harm innocent bystanders, and provoke violent retaliation from the authorities. They may also alienate potential allies and supporters who share their concerns but disagree with their methods.

A better way for the people of Minna to advocate for their needs may be to form or join a civil society organization that can represent their interests and demands in a constructive and coordinated manner. Such an organization can engage in dialogue and negotiation with the government and other stakeholders, mobilize public opinion and awareness, and seek legal and political remedies. It can also collaborate with other organizations and movements across the country and beyond that are facing similar challenges and seeking similar solutions.

The government, on its part, has a responsibility to address the food crisis and ensure the well-being of its citizens.

Some possible actions that the government can take to reduce food prices and improve food security are:

- Keep food trade open. Learning from experience, the government should avoid imposing any unjustified restrictions on food exports or imports, as this may worsen the situation and create more instability. Instead, the government should cooperate with other countries and international organizations to keep food moving and ensure adequate supply and distribution.

- Support smallholder farmers and rural communities. The government should invest in improving the productivity and resilience of smallholder farmers and rural communities, who are the backbone of the country’s food system. This may include providing them with access to credit, inputs, extension services, infrastructure, markets, and social protection.

- Regulate food markets and prices. The government should monitor and regulate the food markets and prices to prevent any unfair or abusive practices by middlemen, traders, or corporations that may exploit the situation and harm the consumers or producers. This may include enforcing anti-trust laws, imposing price caps or subsidies, and ensuring transparency and accountability.

- Strengthen social safety nets and nutrition programs. The government should expand and improve the social safety nets and nutrition programs that can protect the most vulnerable and food-insecure people, especially children, women, and the elderly. This may include providing them with cash transfers, food vouchers, school feeding, or supplementary feeding.

- Reduce Import Duties: The cost of import duty should be reduced drastically, it should be lower than it has ever been.

These are some of the possible actions that the government can take to reduce food prices and improve food security in Nigeria.

Remember we are having an online conference on this matter this weekend, try to be part of it, and together let's move Nigeria forward.
