Vanguard for democracy and good Governance is an organisation which aims at deepening the practice and ideals of democracy.
Democratic governance can be understood as the capacity of a society to define and establish policies and resolve their conflict peacefully within the existing legal system. This is a necessary condition for the rule of law along with the separation of powers and a legal system that ensures the enjoyment of individual freedom and right: civil, social, political and cultural. This requires institut
ions based on the principles of equity, freedom, participation in decision making, accountability and promoting the inclusion of the most vulnerable sector of the society. It is through improved governance that the benefits of democratic development most directly impact the lives of citizens. Conversely, the inability of the public sector institutions to function effectively and democratically undermines the workings and sustainability of democratic reforms. Working with legislatures, executive offices, local governments, Vanguard for Democracy and Good Governance’s programmes seek to (a) promote transparent leadership and accountability in the Nigerian polity. (b) to promote good governance between the political class and the electorate. (c) to promote participatory democracy and good representation so that the locals will have a sense of belonging in governance. (d) to champion electorate enlightenment and education through conferences, seminars, rallies.etc (e) human capital development and training. Also, we seek to promote effective public sector institutions and processes that operate in a manner consistent with democratic values of transparency, representation, pluralism and accountability .But then, what exactly makes democratic governance endure and deliver to the people ? The glowing incidence of democratic breakdowns in developing countries is related to the problems with quality of democratic institutions beyond election .They include functioning legislature , checks and balances on the executive power , independent judiciary , rule of law and many other facets of democracy that citizens want to experience in their daily life. If the quality of these institutions is poor , democracies will not perform well , and they will not engender trust and confidence of their citizens and thus be prone to breakdown .
