NAFDAC Destroys Counterfeit, Expired and Unwholesome Products Worth Over ₦1.8 Billion in Abuja
NAFDAC has destroyed counterfeit, substandard, falsified, expired and unwholesome regulated products valued at over ₦1.8 billion at the Kuje dumpsite in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The destruction exercise involved the incineration of counterfeit medicines, banned sachet alcohol, expired pharmaceuticals, fake chemicals and other unsafe products seized across Abuja and surrounding areas, including items voluntarily submitted by companies, NGOs, and the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN).
Speaking during the exercise, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the Director of Investigation & Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, warned that counterfeit drug syndicates now deploy sophisticated cloning techniques to imitate genuine products, making it increasingly difficult for consumers to identify fake items.
He disclosed that the Agency recently intercepted several containers of suspicious products falsely declared to evade detection at the ports, stressing the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration and public vigilance.
NAFDAC reiterates that the destruction exercise demonstrates the Agency’s commitment to ensuring that seized products do not re-enter circulation. The Agency also reaffirms its commitment to enforcing the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml, warning that enforcement actions and prosecution will extend to traders found in possession of such products.
NAFDAC urges Nigerians to avoid patronising suspiciously cheap medicines and other regulated products, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office or the NAFDAC Call Centre.

https://bit.ly/42Uakzq
NAFDAC is notifying healthcare providers and the public of the circulation of counterfeit or falsified Augmentin 625mg Tablets (2 x 7 tablets pack) with Batch No. AC3N in Nigeria. NAFDAC has received information from the Marketing Authorisation Holder for GlaxoSmithKline products in Nigeria regarding suspected counterfeit Augmentin 625mg Tablets.
This alert follows a series of complaints received by the genuine manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), regarding suspected counterfeit Augmentin 625mg Tablets bearing the Batch No. AC3N, circulating in Nigeria.
GSK evaluated and confirmed that the suspected product was counterfeit after reviewing documentary evidence, photographs, and a video from social media. Although the product shared the same batch number as authentic stock previously supplied to Nigeria, it exhibited inconsistent manufacturing and expiry dates, indicating that it had been falsified.
Findings from the manufacturer’s investigation:
• Batch AC3N was manufactured at Worthing, United Kingdom, on 23 August 2023.
• The batch was packed between 19 and 20 September 2023.
• No batch with the number AC3N was produced in September 2025.
• The manufacturing and expiry dates shown on the suspect sample (Manufactured: September 2025 / Expiry: September 2028) are inconsistent with GSK production records and cannot be attributed to a GSK-produced batch.
• Packaging-level discrepancies, including textual errors and poor fin seal quality, were identified.
• Based on the evidence reviewed, the product was assessed as counterfeit.
Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid) is an antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections. Any falsified version may contain incorrect amounts of active ingredients, no active ingredient, or harmful substances.
Product Details:
• Product Name: Augmentin 625mg Tablets
• Pack Size: 2 x 7 Tablets
• Batch Number: AC3N
• Manufacturer of Genuine Product: GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Worthing Site, United Kingdom
Healthcare professionals are advised to review stock in hospitals, clinics, and pharmacy stores, immediately quarantine any suspected counterfeit stock, and discontinue the sale or distribution of any suspected counterfeit.

NAFDAC Convenes Stakeholders’ Engagement to Showcase Regulatory Transformation and Strengthen Nigeria’s Commitment to the African Medicines Agency
NAFDAC, in collaboration with World Bank, the Bank of Industry, and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, convened a One-Day Stakeholders’ Engagement on Monday, 5 May 2026, at the Abuja Intercontinental Hotel. The event, themed “Nigeria’s Leadership in Strengthening Medicines Regulation and Public Health in Africa,” brought together key national, regional, and international stakeholders to advance dialogue on regulatory excellence and continental collaboration.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted NAFDAC’s regulatory transformation in recent years, driven by strategic reforms, digital innovation, strengthened enforcement, and alignment with international best practices. These efforts have enhanced transparency, efficiency, and turnaround time for regulatory processes, while reinforcing the Agency’s capacity to safeguard public health and support national development. Nigeria’s growing regulatory maturity continues to position the country as a leading authority in medicines regulation across Africa.
A central focus of the engagement was Nigeria’s commitment to the African Medicines Agency (AMA), an African Union initiative aimed at harmonising medicines regulation, improving access to quality-assured medical products, and strengthening health systems across the continent. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in pharmacovigilance, manufacturing oversight, and the fight against substandard and falsified medical products.
The forum also provided a platform to deepen partnerships with development agencies, the private sector, academia, and international organisations, while exploring investment opportunities in local pharmaceutical manufacturing and regulatory capacity development. Participants reaffirmed the need for sustained collaboration to drive innovation, strengthen systems, and enhance access to safe, effective, and quality medicines.
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to advancing regulatory excellence, promoting public health, and supporting Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s health security agenda. The Agency emphasised that the outcomes of the engagement will contribute to strengthening stakeholder confidence, fostering investment, and accelerating the implementation of a robust, modern regulatory framework aligned with continental and global standards.
