This is the Official page of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet)

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) came into existence by an Act of the National Assembly – NiMet (Establishment) ACT 2003, enacted on the 21st of May 2003, and became
effective on the 19th of June 2003 following Presidential assent. It is a Federal Government agency charged with the responsibility to advise the Federal Government on all aspects of meteorology; project, prepare and interpret government policy in the field of meteorology; and to
issue weather (and climate) forecasts for the safe operations of
aircrafts, ocean going vessels and oil rigs. The Act also makes it the responsibility of the Agency to observe, collate, collect, process and disseminate all meteorological data and information within and outside; co-ordinate research activities among staff, and publish scientific papers in the various branches
of meteorology in support of sustainable socio-economic activities
in Nigeria.

NiMet Receives AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been honoured with the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award for its outstanding contributions to weather and climate services, early warning, and climate resilience through Earth observation.

The award was presented to the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner in Abuja on 7 October 2026 as part of the activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium.

The AfriGEO Symposium is a leading African platform that advances the application of Earth observation, geospatial information, and environmental intelligence to support sustainable development and resilience across the continent. Held under the theme, “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” the 2026 symposium brought together policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from AfriGEO’s 33 African member states.

NiMet remains committed to advancing the use of weather, climate and Earth observation information to strengthen early warning, support evidence-based decision-making and enhance climate resilience across Nigeria. Through continued innovation, strategic partnerships, and the delivery of timely, actionable climate information, the Agency will continue to support the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda and contribute to a safer, more informed, and climate-resilient Nigeria.

🌧️ Rainfall Gradually Declines as the Rainy Season Retreats Across Nigeria

October 2026 is expected to bring varying rainfall conditions across Nigeria as the rainy season gradually retreats southwards. Cumulative rainfall amounts are forecast to range from 8.0 mm to 352.1 mm across the country, with wetter conditions expected over the southern and coastal areas.

Coastal areas are expected to receive about 240–400 mm of rainfall, while the central and inland areas of the South may record 80–240 mm. The northern parts of the country are expected to receive 0-80 mm.

The probabilistic rainfall outlook indicates normal to above-normal rainfall over the Northern, Central, and Southwestern parts of the country, while normal to below-normal rainfall is expected over the inland areas of the Southeast and coastal regions.

🌦️ Weather Pattern: Rainfall is expected to gradually reduce across most northern areas as the rainy season retreats southwards. However, some locations may still experience episodes of rainfall and thunderstorms.

🌄 CENTRAL STATES

☁️ The morning is expected to remain generally cloudy, with a chance of thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Niger State.

⛈️ Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over parts of the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi and Niger States.

🌊 SOUTHERN STATES

☁️ Cloudy conditions are expected across the region in the morning, with a chance of light rainfall over parts of Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

⛈️ During the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Ondo, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Oyo, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers States.

⛈️ If thunderstorms develop, seek shelter indoors and avoid exposed areas, tall trees and structures that may be unsafe.

🌬️ Secure loose objects around homes and workplaces, as strong winds may accompany thunderstorms.

🌊 Do not attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads. Residents in low-lying areas should remain alert.

🚗 Motorists are advised to drive carefully, as rainfall can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

🔌 Where possible, disconnect sensitive electrical appliances during thunderstorms to protect them from power surges.
