ROAD TO 2027: Mahmood Yakubu bows out as INEC Chairman, hands over to Agbamuche as Acting chairman

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after serving two consecutive five-year terms.

Appointed in 2015, Yakubu led the commission through multiple election cycles and reforms during his ten-year stewardship. On Tuesday, he handed over leadership to May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head.

In his farewell remarks, Yakubu urged his former colleagues to extend full cooperation and support to the Acting Chairman to ensure the smooth continuation of the commission’s activities.

However, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce a new INEC Chairman in the coming days. The matter is likely to feature prominently at the upcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for later this week.
