NNRA Reinforces Regulatory Oversight of Industrial Radiography, Well Logging Operations

The NNRA has reinforced the need for effective regulatory oversight of industrial radiography and well logging operations to protect workers, the public and the environment from radiation risks. The emphasis was made during the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar, where Engr. Christabel Ebele Ekeocha, Deputy Manager, Radiological Safety Department, presented on “Inspection Procedures for Industrial Radiography and Well Logging Facilities.”

Ekeocha highlighted key inspection areas, including authorization and licensing, source inventory and security, personnel competence, radiation monitoring, equipment integrity, emergency preparedness and record verification. She also outlined the importance of thorough pre-inspection planning, facility assessment and evidence-based reporting in identifying non-compliances and ensuring appropriate corrective actions.

The seminar identified improved inspector competence, regular updating of radioactive source inventories, stronger integrated safety and security inspections, and increased regulatory-industry engagement as measures to strengthen oversight and promote a sustained safety culture in industrial radiography and well logging operations.

NNRA DEEPENS NUCLEAR SECURITY ENGAGEMENT AT NISS CBRNE WORKSHOP

The NNRA has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s nuclear security preparedness through its participation in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) workshop organised by the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) for Course 19 participants.

The workshop, themed “Evolving Technologies, Resource Competition, Nuclear Security Culture and CBRNE Preparedness: Navigating Africa’s Conflict Dynamics,” brings together management-level personnel to examine emerging technologies and evolving security threats, with particular attention to preparedness and strategic responses to CBRNE-related risks across the continent

As part of the engagement, the NNRA is contributing its regulatory expertise through specialised presentations on nuclear and radiological safety and security. The Authority’s participation provides an opportunity to strengthen awareness of nuclear security issues among key stakeholders and promote a coordinated approach to preventing, preparing for and responding to emerging CBRNE threats

NNRA Strengthens Regulatory Inspection of Nuclear Gauge Facilities

The NNRA has reiterated the importance of effective regulatory inspections in ensuring the safe and secure use of nuclear gauges across Nigeria. The emphasis was made during the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar, where Mr. Olaoluwa Philemon, Manager, Radiological Safety Department, delivered a presentation titled “Inspection Procedures for Nuclear Gauge Facilities.”

The presentation focused on key aspects of regulatory inspection, including pre-inspection planning, assessment of facilities, verification of radioactive source inventories, radiation protection measures, personnel competence, security controls and emergency preparedness. It also highlighted the importance of reviewing records, interviewing personnel and taking appropriate measurements to establish evidence of compliance.

The session further examined common regulatory non-conformities and stressed the need for inspectors to verify actual practices against documented procedures, properly record findings and ensure follow-up of corrective actions. The seminar reinforced NNRA’s commitment to strengthening regulatory oversight and promoting radiation safety in the use of nuclear gauges.

NNRA Completes Gazetting of Four Key Nuclear Regulations

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice, completed the gazetting of four important nuclear and radiation safety regulations in April 2026: the Nigerian Design and Construction of Nuclear Power Plants Regulations, 2023; Nigerian Basic Ionizing Radiation Regulations, 2023; Nigerian Transportation of Radioactive Material Regulations, 2023; and Nigerian Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management Regulations, 2023.

The completion of the gazetting process is a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s nuclear legal and regulatory framework. Gazetting gives the regulations formal legal recognition and provides the necessary foundation for their implementation and enforcement, covering critical areas including nuclear power plant safety, radiation protection, transportation of radioactive materials, and the safe management of radioactive waste and spent fuel.

This achievement reinforces the NNRA’s commitment to effective regulatory oversight and to its mandate of protecting people, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, while supporting the safe, secure and peaceful application of nuclear technology for Nigeria’s development.

NNRA HOLDS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING FOR STAFF

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) held an Emergency Response Team (ERT) training yesterday at its Headquarters in Abuja, organised by the Emergency Preparedness and Response Division (EPRD). The training was aimed at strengthening the Authority’s emergency preparedness, enhancing fire emergency response capabilities and promoting a safer working environment.

The session equipped members of the Emergency Response Team with practical knowledge and skills required to respond effectively and in a coordinated manner during emergencies. It also emphasised the importance of preparedness, teamwork and prompt action in protecting lives and property.

The training concluded with a practical fire-fighting session, where participants demonstrated their understanding of different classes of fire and appropriate response techniques. The exercise reinforced NNRA’s commitment to building a safety-conscious workforce and ensuring that staff were better prepared to protect themselves and others in the event of an emergency.

NNRA Highlights Transport Inspection Procedures for Radioactive Materials

The NNRA has highlighted the importance of effective regulatory inspection in ensuring the safe and secure transport of radioactive materials in Nigeria. The emphasis was made during the Authority’s weekly in-house seminar held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, where Mr. Amofuokhai Andrew Ikhazuagbe, of the Section of Transport Safety, Division of Waste and Transport Safety, Department of Radiological Safety, delivered a presentation titled “Inspection Procedure for Transport Inspection of Radioactive Material.”

The presentation examined the role of transport inspections in verifying compliance by consignors, carriers, consignees and other persons involved in the transportation process. It covered pre-shipment/pre-authorisation and in-transit inspections, focusing on the suitability of vehicles and packages, transport documentation, markings, labels, placards, safety equipment, personnel competence, and approved safety and security arrangements. The session also addressed package inspections, including contamination checks, radiation dose rates, leaking packages, radiation protection measures, the use of personal protective equipment and dosimeters, health monitoring, personnel fitness for duty, and emergency preparedness.

The seminar underscored the importance of systematic inspection, proper documentation and effective radiation protection programmes in preventing unnecessary radiation exposure, loss of control and contamination during transportation. It further emphasised the need for robust regulatory oversight to ensure that radioactive materials are transported safely and securely, while protecting workers, the public and the environment and supporting the peaceful use of radioactive materials.
