2027: Hardships Caused by President Bola Tinubu, and How Governor Makinde Would Have Handled It Differently if he were President of Nigeria.

Tanko Wasiu is writing from Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

From May 29, 2023 that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took over office till date, the President and his Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have implemented a number of rash policies, including unilateral increase in the prices of fuel, increase in electricity tariff and devaluing the naira twice.

However, these reforms have driven inflation to a 28-year high, worsening a cost-of-living crisis, hunger, poverty, unemployment, food shortages, etc.

President Tinubu and his Party have not also done enough in the last one year to address Nigeria's security problems, which is greatly affecting the livelihoods of citizens.

Some of the hardships caused by President Tinubu’s bad decisions/policies are:

1. Soaring inflation rate:

President Tinubu's bad economic policies have led to a significant increase in the cost of living, making it difficult for Nigerians to afford basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothings, high cost of medical care and supplies, etc.

2. High Cost of Fuel prices and Scarcity:

President Tinubu’s declaration of fuel subsidy removal on the day of his inauguration on May 29, 2023, and his administration's mismanagement of the fuel sector has resulted in frequent fuel shortages, high prices of gasoline, thereby causing hardship for commuters and businesses in Nigeria.

3. Electricity crisis:

The lack of reliable electricity supply has hindered economic growth and made life difficult for Nigerians, who often rely on expensive generators for power.

4. Unemployment:

President Tinubu's policies have failed to create jobs, leading to a rise in unemployment and poverty.

5. Currency devaluation:

The naira's value has plummeted under his administration, making imports more expensive and worsening the economic hardship in the country.

6. Increased poverty:

His policies have led to a significant increase in poverty levels, with many Nigerians struggling to make ends meet.

7. Insecurity:

President Tinubu’s docile approach to security issues in the country, including his refusal to allow local authorities to take charge of security operations in their environment has led to a rise in crime and violence.

8. Healthcare crisis:

His policies have led to a decline in the healthcare sector, making it difficult for Nigerians to access quality medical care.

9. Education crisis:

The education sector has also suffered under his administration, with many schools lacking basic resources and teachers going on strike for unpaid wages and emoluments.

10. Human rights abuses:

President Tinubu's administration human rights abuses, including suppressing dissent and restricting freedom of speech is another major problem of the administration.

How Governor Makinde would have handled this situation differently:

If Governor Seyi Makinde were President of Nigeria, he would have taken the following steps to address the hardship caused by President Tinubu's policies:

1. Economic Stimulus Package:

Governor Makinde as President of Nigeria would have implemented a comprehensive economic stimulus package to boost economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty and he had done in Oyo State.

2. Fuel Crisis:

Governor Makinde would have coordinated a new energy policy to address the fuel crisis, management of the purported fuel subsidy scheme and how Nigeria can refine its fuel for local markets and exports.

3. Electricity Sector Reform:

Governor Makinde will implement a comprehensive reform of the electricity sector to improve power supply and reduce the reliance on generators.

4. Job Creation Initiatives:

He would have launch job creation initiatives, such as youth empowerment programs and infrastructure projects, to reduce unemployment as well as reduce poverty as done in Oyo State.

5. Social Welfare Programs:

Introduce social welfare programs, such as food assistance, youth empowerment initiatives, soft loans, etc, to support vulnerable Nigerians.

6. Education and Healthcare Reforms:

Implement reforms to improve the quality of education and healthcare, making them more accessible and more affordable.

7. Human Rights Protection:

Taken steps to protect human rights, promoting freedom of speech and assembly, and ensuring accountability for human rights abuses.

8. Security Sector Reform:

Implement a comprehensive reform of the security sector to address insecurity and improve the safety of Nigerians.

9. Anti-Corruption Measures:

Strengthen anti-corruption agencies and implement measures to reduce corruption and improve transparency.

10. Economic Diversification:

Implement policies to diversify the economy, reducing dependence on oil and promoting sustainable economic growth.

11. Infrastructure Development:

Invest in critical infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and public transportation, to improve connectivity and economic growth.

12. Foreign Policy Reform:

Reform foreign policy to improve relationships with other countries and attract foreign investment.

How Atiku Abubakar, Six PDP Governors Destroy the Party Before the 2015 Elections:

By Yakubu Dani from Zamfara State-

The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and six governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) played a significant role in the party's downfall ahead of the 2015 general election.

The governors, who were dissatisfied with the party's leadership and the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan, first created a new party under the PDP and later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.

This mass defection, led by Atiku Abubakar, dealt a significant blow to the PDP, causing a rift within the party and weakening its chances in the elections.

The defectors cited issues such as the party's internal democracy, the marginalization of the north, and the presidency's perceived high-handedness as reasons for their departure.

The consequences of this defection were far-reaching:

1. Weakened Party Structure:

The departure of key stakeholders and governors weakened the PDP's organizational structure, making it harder to mobilize support and resources for the 2015 election.

2. Loss of Key States:

The defectors came from strategic states like Rivers, Jigawa, Niger, Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, and Sokoto, which were crucial to the PDP's electoral success.
Their departure handed these states over to the APC.

3. Divided Party:

The defection created a divided party, with some members loyal to the presidency and others sympathetic to the defectors' cause. This internal conflict hindered the party's ability to present a united front in the 2015 election.

4. Strengthened Opposition:

The defection significantly strengthened the APC, providing it with experienced politicians, resources, and strategic alliances. This bolstered the opposition's chances in the 2015 election.

5. Leadership Crisis:

The defection led to a leadership crisis within the PDP, as some members questioned the party's direction and the presidency's leadership style.

In conclusion, Atiku Abubakar and the six governors' defection from the PDP significantly contributed to the party's decline ahead of the 2015 election.

Their departure weakened the party's structure, led to the loss of key states, created internal divisions, strengthened the opposition, and triggered a leadership crisis.

These factors ultimately paved the way for the APC's Buhari victory in the 2015 presidential election.

Major Reasons why Presidential Power in Nigeria Will Remain in the South in 2027, and Why Governor Seyi Makinde Should be the Next President-

Tunde Efosa is writing from Benin City, Edo State.

Since the beginning of the fourth republic in 1999, Nigeria's political landscape has been reshaped by a delicate balance of power between its various regions of North and South.

This is why, as the 2027 presidential election approaches, there is a growing consensus among voters that the South should retain the presidency based on the trajectory of events from 1999 to date.

Therefore, and in view of the current political climate in Nigeria, coupled with the flip flop of the Tinubu’s presidency, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has been fingered as the most qualified person to succeed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in continuation of the southern presidency and in line with the rotation format.

Firstly, the rotation of power between the North and South has been a long-standing tradition in Nigeria's political history.

This unwritten agreement has ensured that no single region dominates the others, thereby promoting national unity and stability. With the North having held power from 2015 to 2023, it is only fair and reasonable that the South retains the presidency in 2027.

Secondly, Governor Makinde has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, making him an ideal candidate for the presidency.

His achievements in Oyo State, such as infrastructure development, education reform, and economic growth, showcases his ability to govern effectively. His prosperity policies and vision for a united Nigeria align with the aspirations of many Nigerians.

Thirdly, Governor Makinde's political experience and national appeal makes him a strong contender for the presidency in 2027.

As a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he has built a reputation as a bridge-builder and a unifying figure. His ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and region positions him well to lead a country as diverse as Nigeria.

In conclusion, Governor Makinde's leadership credentials, and his national appeal make a strong case for him to succeed President Tinubu in 2027.

As Nigeria moves towards the next election, it is essential to prioritize national unity, progress, and development, and Governor Makinde has the vision and capacity to lead the country towards a brighter and prosperous future.
