WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ARTISANAL AND SMALL SCALE MINING
Who is an ASM Operator?
Artisanal and Small Scale Mines Operators are miners who generally utilize very low/no levels of mechanization mining undertaken by individuals, families, or small groups, they have a great potential of generating huge revenue and employment generation if properly harnessed.
HOW TO START AS AN ASM OPERATOR
STEP 1
Obtain appropriate permits forms from Mining Cadatre Office MCO, Ministry of Solid Minerals Development Abuja OR Zonal Offices of mining cadastre office located at Jos, Ibadan, Kano, Maiduguri, Enugu and Port Harcourt. OR state offices of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
THE VARIOUS PERMITS AND FORMS ARE
• Reconnaisance Permit: This permit confers the right to the applicant to prospect for minerals in a non-exclusive area granted in line with laid down regulations.
• Exploration Licence: This permit confers the right to the applicant to exclusively delineate the mineral area, determine the mineral reserves as well as determine the viability of exploiting the discovered mineral deposits in an approved area in line with laid down regulations.
• Small Scale Mining Lease: This permit confers the right to the applicant to exclusively mine and process minerals from the area covered in line with laid down regulations.
• Quarry Lease: This permit confers the right to the applicants to exclusively extract and process rocks/ minerals (industrial) from the area covered in line with laid down regulations.
• Water Use Permit: This permit confers the right to the applicant to use water for mining/ mineral processing activities needed to exploit the mineral deposits in line with laid regulations.

STEP 2
Complete forms in triplicates and submit to MCO Abuja with necessary attachments as highlighted above. Ensure that the submitted forms have been duly stamped by MCO registry as certified as correctly completed.
STEP 3
Monitor the progress of application by phone or any other medium suitable so as to respond to queries that might arise following the processing of submitted applications (e.g. Overlapping issues, improper coordinates e.t.c)
STEP 4
Promptly pay up annual service fees as demanded by MCO following approval of application
STEP 5
Submit a copy of permit Licence to the state mines office in-charge of area covered indicating intentions to commence activities in line with the work plan submitted along with the application for permit and regulations governing mineral prospecting, exploration and exploitation activities.
STEP 6
Inform land owners/ Host communities of proposed date of commencement of activities in line with the work plan submitted along with the application for permit and regulations governing mineral prospecting exploration and exploitation activities.

The Nigeria Mining Week conference and expo returns to Abuja for its ninth edition
from 18 to 20 November 2024. This landmark gathering of mining pioneers, investors,
regulators, suppliers and service providers in the region’s burgeoning extractive industry
will take place at the Abuja Continental Hotel in the Nigerian capital. The organisers of
the event had to change the dates and the venue after the Abuja International
Conference Center was closed unexpectedly due to renovations.
The event is organised by the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) in collaboration with
PwC Nigeria and Vuka Group and is hosted by the Ministry of Solid Minerals

NEW PERMANENT SECRETARY COMMITS TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The New Permanent Secretary, Mines and Steel Development (MMSD), Dr. Mary Ogbe has committed to strengthening the Ministry towards preferring solutions to the challenges facing the nation
While speaking at the Valedictory Session organized by the Management of the Ministry for the Former Permanent Secretary, MMSD, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade on Friday 2, 2023 at the Ministry’s Headquarters, she said all hands must be on deck as the nation looks up to the Ministry in solving its socio-economic problems.

Dr. Ogbe solicited that the outgoing Permanent Secretary runs an open-door policy, which will facilitate relevant consultations on effective and efficient ways of moving the Ministry and Mining Sector forward to ensure holistic diversification of economy.

Earlier in her address, the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade, described the New Accounting Officer as a seasoned Administrator with an impressive track record of delivering high quality performance and pledged her unalloyed support for the growth of MMSD and the Mining Industry.

She called on the Management and Staff of the Ministry to dedicatedly assist the new boss in discharging her duties to ensure the completion of outstanding projects, which will create wealth and jobs for the teeming youths and generate revenue for the government.

On his part, the Dir (HRM), Mohammed Suleiman (mni) expressed readiness of the Ministry’s Workforce to partner with the new Permanent Secretary in order to take the Ministry to higher heights and boost the economy.

In the same vein, he thanked the former Permanent Secretary for her immense contributions towards realizing the mandate of the Ministry and growth of the Mining industry.

In their good will messages to Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the top government functionaries, who graced the occasion, unanimously, described her as a purpose-driven and passionate leader which reflected in her strives to transform the Ministry’s standards for an improved system and processes.

The occasion witnessed the unveiling of the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) to store, organize and manage documents in the form of electronic files to enhance performance in the Ministry.
