Civic Orientation 101:
Basic lessons in Civics, as taught by Tosin Ajibare Gold (), Founder of the Patriot Group.

The first duty of a citizen is to know his/her rights and responsibilities, the second is to apply them, only then can they truly live as full members of the society. As such;

Citizens, most especially our youths and children, must be taught to show interest in our society & how it works they must also seek to refresh and improve their knowledge of how our government operates under the Constitution and how they can participate in it & make it work for them.

"Only in this way can they assume the full responsibility of citizenship, make our government more truly OF, BY and FOR the people, live as full members of the society and by so leave their own indelible mark as an integral part of this Nation. I mean leave a mark as one who once lived here, not just a passerby - Tosin Ajibare Gold

•Definition of Civic: of or relating to a citizen, a city, citizenship, or community affairs.
It refers to the duties, responsibilities or activities of people in relation to their town, city, local area/community or nationality.

•What is called Civic-minded?
having, showing, or actively carrying out one's concern for the condition and affairs of one's community; public-spirited.

•Who is a Civically Responsible Person?
Someone who is interested in, cares about & contributes to civic issues going on in his/her community and about his/her people.

•Why is Civic Responsibility important?
Civic responsibility is paramount to the success of democracy, societal welfare and all round growth of a people and their community. By engaging in civic responsibility, citizens ensure and uphold true democratic & progressive values.

•What is the benefit of being Civic to an individual?
Being Civic empowers us to be well-informed, active citizens and gives us the opportunity to change our society & world for better. It is a vital part of any democracy, and equips ordinary people with knowledge about our democracy and our Constitution.

•What is Civic Engagement or Civic Participation?
Civic engagement or Civic Participation is any individual or group activity addressing issues of public concern. Civic engagement includes communities working together or individuals working alone in both political and non-political actions to protect public values or make a change in a community.

•What is the Goal of Civic Engagement: The goal of civic engagement is to address public concerns and promote the quality of the community.

CIVIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY:

Civic duties ensure that democratic values written into the Constitution are upheld & that a people continually grow.
Responsibilities include both those that are voluntary as well as those required by law.

•A. Mandatory Duties & Responsibilities Required by law.

Certain civic responsibilities considered central to the democratic philosophy of the country are required by law. Citizens must comply with certain mandatory obligations, namely:

1. Obeying the law. Every citizen regardless of position or title must obey federal, state and local laws, and pay the penalties that can be incurred when a law is broken.

2. Paying taxes. All citizens must pay taxes in one form or another, including federal, state, local, property and income taxes. Taxes are supposed to be used to fund services and programs - i.e., schools, roads, police and fire protection, Healthcare and national defense - that would be impossible to maintain without the support of tax payments.

•B. Voluntary Responsibilities:
Other civic responsibilities, while not mandatory, are central to democracy & development, citizens are encouraged to exercise certain responsibilities and privileges, including:

1. Staying informed. Citizens have the responsibility to stay informed of the issues affecting their communities, as well as national and international issues, and to be active in the civic processes.

(What is the Civic process? This includes being well informed about the issues and candidates before voting in an election, getting involved in a political campaign or running for public office, or using their right to address the government through activism.)

(Activism: is the use of direct action to achieve an end, either for or against an issue, be it political, economical, environmental or social.. It is the policy or action of using vigorous, visible & coercive campaigning to bring about political or social change.) (When people tie themselves to trees to protect the forest from being cut down, it is an example of activism.)

2. Voting. While voting is a right and privilege of citizenship, it is also a duty or responsibility. citizens of a democratic government have a responsibility to participate in their government by registering to vote and voting in elections. By voting, citizens have a voice in their government and help ensure that the democratic representative system of government is maintained.

(Voting refers to the process of selecting a leader and it has five points, 1. registering to vote 2. selecting and supporting an aspirant or running for office. 3. promoting your choice. 4. casting your vote. 5. ensure your vote is counted. )

3. Community involvement. Citizens also should contribute to the well-being of the community by recognizing where help or change is needed and by getting involved through offering their knowledge and talents to local organizations, committees and community projects.

4. Passing it on. It is the responsibility of citizens to pass along the importance of good citizenship to future generations. By teaching their children how to stay informed, to get involved, to obey the law, and the necessity of voting, parents and mentors demonstrate how to improve society.
