Yesterday, Ehugbo stood still to mark one of its strongest cultural pillar, IKWU DAY.
In Ehugbo(Afikpo), Ikwu is more than a family cluster. It is identity, structure and continuity. It is the root from which values, discipline, inheritance and honour flow.
Every Ikwu carries its own history, its own ancestral footprints, and its own responsibility to preserve the dignity of the land.
Through Ikwu, lineage is remembered, heritage is protected and character is shaped. It is the framework that keeps Ehugbo united across generations.
Among the many Ikwu in Ehugbo, the Ibechi-ugo matrilineal stands distinct.
Their gathering yesterday at Oko Nnachi Esq. Compound was not just a meeting. It was a reaffirmation of heritage.
Ibechi-ugo is widely known in Ehugbo for ancestral wealth, refined character and intellectual strength.
Over time, they have built a reputation for responsibility, wisdom and integrity. In community matters, their voice carries weight because it is rooted in discipline and honour. They are counted among the most dependable Ikwu in Ehugbo.
A particularly beautiful moment marked the day as Nwamini Solomon Esq. was formally welcomed into the Ibechi-ugo family. In keeping with Ehugbo cultural tradition when receiving a member from another town, the women lifted their voices in the sacred Okokoriko song.
That song is not ordinary music. In Ehugbo, it announces life. It signifies the birth of a child. It declares acceptance, belonging and a fresh beginning.
By singing Okokoriko, the women symbolically proclaimed that a new son had been born into the lineage. It was a powerful expression of joy, unity and continuity. Laughter filled the compound. Smiles carried the pride of ancestors. It was more than ceremony. It was culture alive.
General Ikwu Day reminded everyone that heritage is not something we talk about once a year. It is something we live, protect and pass on. And Ibechi-ugo once again showed why they remain a pillar within Ehugbo.
