*Transition of Regulatory Function from NERC to Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau.*

In a significant development, regulatory oversight of electricity distribution within Ondo State has transitioned from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the newly established Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau. This transfer marks a pivotal moment in the state's energy landscape, ushering in a localized regulatory framework tailored to address the specific needs and challenges of Ondo State's electricity sector.

The establishment of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau signifies a strategic shift towards enhancing efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness in electricity regulation within the state. By assuming direct regulatory authority, the Bureau is poised to streamline decision-making processes, facilitate faster responses to consumer grievances, and foster greater transparency in the management of electricity services.

This transition is poised to empower the state government with greater autonomy and control over electricity regulation, enabling it to enact policies and initiatives that are finely attuned to the socioeconomic dynamics and developmental priorities of Ondo State. Furthermore, the establishment of the Bureau is expected to stimulate investment in the state's electricity infrastructure, thereby bolstering economic growth, job creation, and overall quality of life for residents.

The move from NERC to the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau represents a pivotal step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency, reliability, and sustainability within the state. It underscores the commitment of the Ondo State government to proactively address the unique challenges facing its electricity sector and pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous future.

Tinubu’s Policy Document (Renewed Hope 2023)

Electricity/ Eliminate Estimated Billing

We will end this unpopular and harmful practice and ensure that all electricity bills are meter-based.
By streamlining and accelerating existing schemes such as the National Mass Metering Programme and the Meter Asset Provider Scheme, we shall seek to ensure that all electricity connections are properly metered within the shortest possible time frame.

New connections will not be permitted to be energised from the Grid unless a meter has been installed.
DisCos will be required to ensure that new connections are metered during the construction phase.

We will further enable DisCos to charge cost-reflective tariffs for electricity supply.

Energy Transition: Ondo State to Become a Green Hydrogen Hub

Green Hydrogen is projected to supplant gas when the ongoing energy transition goes full circle. Hydrogen burns in engines like gas but it yields water and not carbon as byproduct, making it a clean energy source. For hydrogen itself to be green (clean), it must be produced from a clean energy source — solar, wind, hydro, etc.

As part of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s REDEEMED Agenda, Ondo State is being positioned as a regional hub for green hydrogen production and export. Ondo State, which is Nigeria’s sunshine state, has a huge solar power potential, fresh water needed for electrolysis to produce hydrogen, and contiguity to sea for easy shipping to Europe.

In furtherance of the above, Ondo State Commissioner for Energy, Mines & Mineral Resources, Engr. Razaq Obe, and DG, Project Performance and Implementation Monitoring Unit (PPIMU), Engr. Babajide Akeredolu, have embarked on a technical tour of Berlin on German government’s invitation.
