OSPHCDA PROMOTES CONTRACEPTIVE ACCESS, HONOURS FAMILY PLANNING CHAMPIONS

Informed reproductive health decisions begin with access to accurate information, contraceptive options and quality family planning services. To mark World Contraception Day, the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (OSPHCDA) held a family planning awareness campaign and recognised outstanding Family Planning Champions.

The event took place at Orita-Obele Primary Health Care Centre, Oloko Motor Park and surrounding communities, bringing together health workers, community leaders, development partners and members of the public.

Speaking at the event, the State Coordinator, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Mrs. Opeyemi E. Agunbiade, said family planning provides health and socio-economic benefits beyond birth spacing, including improved maternal health, reduced maternal and infant health risks, and informed reproductive health decisions.

She said the Family Planning Champions were selected based on their use of family planning services, follow-up and community mobilisation efforts.

Chairman, Ward Development Committee of Orita-Obele Primary Health Care Centre, Chief Ibrahim Adewuyi, commended the Agency for promoting family planning and community awareness.

The State Coordinator, MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices, Mr. Israel Adedotun, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to supporting family planning services in Ondo State through commodities, provider training and technical assistance.

Activities included an awareness walk, distribution of educational materials and condoms, and community discussions on family planning and related myths.

Family Planning Champions recognised with cash awards and plaques were Mrs. Ogungbade Damilola, Mrs. Samuel Njeomu, Mrs. Salisu Mary and Mr. Michael Adeyeye.

World Contraception Day is observed annually on September 26 to promote awareness of contraception and informed reproductive health choices. The 2026 theme is “No Barriers, Just Choices, Contraceptive Access Now.”

🚨 PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY:

Following reports of an unexplained illness in parts of Odigbo Local Government Area, the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Ondo State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with partners, are investigating the reported cases to determine the cause and guide appropriate public health measures.

While investigations and surveillance are ongoing, residents are advised to:

🔴 DO NOT consume locally made alcoholic drinks or beverages from unverified or suspicious sources.

🔴 DO NOT drink products with unknown contents or questionable packaging.

🔴 DO NOT rely on or share rumours about the illness.

🔴 REPORT immediately anyone who develops unusual symptoms, especially high fever or sudden changes in vision, to the nearest health facility for prompt medical attention.
