The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a concrete water reservoir that claimed the lives of five members of the same family at Umuike-Aja Village, Nenwenta Community, Awgu Local Government Area, in the early hours of September 18, 2026.

At about 5:45 a.m. of the same date, the Police received information that the reservoir, attached to an uncompleted building, had collapsed onto the adjoining house of a neighbour, identified as Raphael Onwu (male). Onwu, his wife, mother and two children died in the incident.

Meanwhile, the owner of the building on which the reservoir was constructed, one Nkwo Onyedikachi Geoffrey (male), has been arrested in connection with the tragic incident.

The Commissioner of Police condoled with the bereaved family and community, and assured that appropriate action would follow the outcome of the investigation. PRESS RELEASE

ENUGU POLICE ARREST 30-YEAR-OLD MAN FOR ALLEGED GRUESOME MURDER OF GIRLFRIEND AND CONCEALING HER REMAINS IN HIS APARTMENT'S TOILET

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel (male, aged 30), of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, whose surname, age and address are yet to be established. The suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by Police operatives attached to Awkunanaw Division on September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., following information that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her remains in a nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment. The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the Police. The putrefying remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations of who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). He further stated that, during the argument, he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, and subsequently wrapped and dumped her remains inside the toilet.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has ordered the State CID to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and ensure the suspect is arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations. He also cautions members of the public, particularly unsuspecting young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements and exercise caution about whom they visit or spend time with.

ENUGU CP ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED DISRUPTION OF POLITICAL GATHERINGS, WARNS AGAINST POLITICAL VIOLENCE

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to thoroughly investigate two separate incidents of alleged disruption of political gatherings in Nkanu West LGA on September 12, 2026, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.

The first incident occurred at the Ndiuno-Obuoffia community, where it was alleged that armed hoodlums disrupted NDC ward meeting with sporadic shooting and injured two attendees. The second occurred at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani, where hoodlums also allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs prepared for a PDP rally. Police operatives were promptly deployed to both scenes upon receipt of the reports to prevent further breaches and track down the fleeing suspects, despite no prior notification or request for police security coverage for either gathering.

CP Giwa reiterates the position he conveyed during his meeting with leaders of political parties in the State that all political activities must be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law. He stressed that electoral offences remain punishable under the law and warned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against violence, intimidation, destruction of property or any conduct capable of disrupting public peace and the electoral process.

The Commissioner urges political parties and stakeholders to promptly notify the Police of their campaigns, meetings, rallies and other gatherings to facilitate appropriate security arrangements. He assures the public that the Command will continue to maintain a peaceful and secure environment for lawful political activities and deal decisively with anyone who violates the law.

On September 9, 2026, at about 5.00 p.m., operatives attached to Nkanu West Division, with the assistance of Forest Guards, arrested Nnamani Chekube Eze (male, aged 24) in possession of an unregistered Sanya motorcycle.
