Topic: CONVICTION
Text: Luke 16:31
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" NIV
Concerning the request of the rich man from hell that Abraham should send Lazarus to his father’s house, Abraham told him, they have Moses and the Prophets to warn them let them listen to them. However, the rich man was of the opinion their repentance will be quick if someone from the land of the dead go and preach or warn them. Here again, Abraham still insists that if they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.
The issue here is not whether they know the scripture. From this interaction, it is obvious they have the scripture in their possession and they read it. Nevertheless, 1what1 they lacked was conviction. They know there is heaven and hell but their problem is that they do not believe it. It was just a mental accent. And because they did not believe or were convinced, they were living as they wanted. Their lives would have changed from bad to good knowing the gravious torment of hell awaiting them.
The word in this Text which is very important and which determines the character of any man is convince. We live out our conviction not just our belief. Convince is to make somebody sure or certain of something. It is the inner persuasion to do something. It is to pacify or conciliate by other fair means. It is to assent to evidence or authority, to rely on inward certainty. Other words for convince are agree, assure, believe, have confidence, wax confident, obey, persuade, trust, or yield.
What the brothers of the rich man lacked was trust, confidence, assurance, and conviction in the word of God. They have the word of God and listen to it, but they were not persuaded of the truthfulness of the word of God. They must have heard of heaven and hell but they were not persuaded it was a reality. They did not accept the authority of the scriptures to be truth. If they have agreed with the scriptures their lives would have changed because they will be afraid of hell fire. With that fear in their heart there are things they cannot do knowing the terror and torment of hell fire.
Our character is shaped by our conviction i.e., the things we are persuaded to be true or not. We do not put our hands in a burning fire because we are convinced that it will burn us. We do not play with a naked electric wire because we are convinced that once we touch it will electrocoat or shock us even to death. If a man believes that the word of God is true, he will value and live by it. But if he does not believe in it, he will live as he deems without any damn on what the word of God said.
Abraham was righteous because he heard the word of God and was convinced in it and he escaped the torment of hell. Noah, Moses, Joshua, Caleb, and all the righteous men of the scripture were men and women who heard the word of God in their time and were persuaded in it and lived by its instructions and injunctions. The same word of God that came to Abraham, the brothers of the rich man in hell were in possession with it. However, the difference was “CONVICTION.”
Beloved, conviction is faith. it is impossible to please God without faith. Many professing Christians will end up in hell because of ga
*Lord, please work in my heart a deep conviction to your word*

_Topic:_ THE WARNING OF MOSES AND THE PROPHETS
_Text:_ Luke 16:29
√ "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' NI
√ "But Abraham said, 'The Scriptures have warned them again and again. Your brothers can read them any time they want to.' TLB
The rich man requested that Abraham send Lazarus to his father’s house to warn them not to come to this place of torture. In reply, Abraham told him that they had Moses and the prophets. That is to say that even while this rich man was in his lifetime, he equally had the privilege of possessing Moses and the prophets but he chose not to hearken to them.
Moses and the prophets are not just persons but a metaphorical representation of the sections of the scripture according to the Jewish traditions. Their scriptures are divided into three- Torah, prophets, and wisdom books. Here, Abraham chose to talk about Moses which is the Torah, and the prophets which is the section of the former and later prophets.
For Abraham to refer to Moses and the prophets implies that all that his brothers needed to avert torment in hell was the scriptures. They have in their possession the scriptures. All that Abraham said they should do is to read, listen, and obey it. Possibly, they have it but they are not listening to it.
To listen to it is not just about using the ear to hear its reading but obeying it. Listening to it is for them to pay attention to its instructions and follow them.
According to TLB, it said that the scriptures have already warned them repeatedly. Theirs is to listen to the warning of the scriptures. The scripture is more authoritative than every other voice. It is the voice of God and they have it. They were only to read and obey the instructions therein and they will not come to the place of torment in hell.
This tells us that what made this rich man enter hell was that he was not listening to Moses and the Prophets. Moses and the Prophets are what determine the eternal destiny of every man. All who obey the instructions of Moses and the Prophets will not come to the place of torment in eternity. However, those who neglect or disobey the word of God will also come to the place of torment like this rich man. Jesus repeated this in Matt 7:21
_"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. NIV_
Beloved, are you waiting for divine revelation or a message from hell? If you do not hear and hearken to the word of God, is it the message of hell that will save you? The scripture is what will determine your eternal destination. Read, listen, and obey it and you will not be condemned in eternity.
Lord, help me in Your mercy to take heed to the instructions of the scriptures.

TOPIC: WARNING FROM HELL
TEXT: Luke 16:28
for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' NIV
From hell, the rich man pleaded with father Abraham to send Lazarus to his father’s house. In his father’s house, he has five brothers. Possibly, these five brothers were still like him in living the wrong life. His plea was that Lazarus should go and warn them.
To warn someone means to tell somebody of risk or tell him about something that might cause injury or harm to him. It is to tell somebody about a future risk in advance or to advise such a person against a potentially risky or damaging course of action. He wanted Lazarus to go and advise his five brothers in his father’s house of the impending danger of the kind of life they were living capable of bringing them to the place of torment.
Having tasted the agony of hell, he wanted them to be aware of the risk involved in living the kind of life he lived while on earth. It was a message of warning. He did not want Lazarus to paint words for his five brothers but rather to warn them. They must be warned about the impending danger ahead of them. He has made the mistake; he wouldn't want his five brothers to make the same mistake.
This message is not for the five brothers of the rich man alone. It is still more relevant to all who are living on Earth. Anyone who is living the kind of life the rich man lived in his lifetime must be carefully warned of the danger of hell. Living a sinful and selfish life endangers one of hellfire. He warns everyone that hell exists and is a place of torment. Every man still in time, should be warned of the risk and impending danger of torment in hell fire.
Although Lazarus could not come to deliver the message as the rich man requested, however, Jesus our great Saviour who also witnessed this drama, in mercy has revealed and related the message to us. What remains is our choice. If we continue living the way we are living then we will end where the rich man ended. However, if we heed his counsel and advice, we shall escape the danger of hellfire.
Beloved, this is a message from hell. You can choose to heed it or continue to live as it pleases you. The rich man has communicated and warned you. If you get to hell, the rich man will call you a fool. The opportunity he did not have, he has related to you. After going through this story and its commentary and yet end in hell, then you will be of all men most miserable in eternity. Your beating will be great.
_*Lord thank You for revealing to me the impending danger of torment in hell. Please I still plead for the grace to follow You daily for it is only in my relationship with You, that I can ever avert this eternal danger. _*

TOPIC: A PLEA FROM HELL
TEXT: Luke 16:27
"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, NIV
When the rich man saw his first plea of sending Lazarus to dip his hand in water and put it on his tongue the thirst from the flame of fire was not granted because Abraham told him that there was a great gulf between them. He chose to make another plea to Abraham. The first was for himself but now he is asking for his brothers.
His plea to Abraham was to send Lazarus to his father’s house. In hell, he could remember his father’s house again. He knew that his challenge was still the same with his father’s house. The kind of costly mistake he made was still their practice. In hell, he has learned to think about others. In his lifetime, every day, he lived sumptuously only for himself.
However, the torture of hell has instilled in him a humorous nature. Nevertheless, it is now too late. He could not go by himself again. When he had an opportunity, he did not maximize it.
Life in the land of the living is a time of opportunity to prepare for eternity. What he would have done in time, he is now doing in eternity. He now depends on Lazarus whom he neglected in time to do it for him in eternity.
Guess what, from hell, he now has a message for his father’s house. This man was born to be a great evangelist but luxury and pleasure denied him of such a glorious calling. Through eternal experience, he learned to be an evangelist. _Experience is a teacher nevertheless a late and worst teacher._ He learned his lessons too late! Beloved, this is a great lesson for us.
What he neglected in a lifetime, he now wants to do from hell. His experience in hell has melted and broken him. Hell has burnt away all the pride and arrogance in him. He is now thinking correctly and ready to tell others the truth. Unfortunately, it was too late. Solomon said there is time for everything under the sun. Jesus said _“He must work the work of His Father for a night comes when no man can work.”_. Such a night has come to this rich man.
Even though he desired to do something, he could not. Even if he wished to send another, it would not be possible anymore. His time for activities under the earth is over. He has entered eternity. There is no work in eternity. Eternity is a time of receiving retribution, reward, and rest.
His father’s house was now a priority in his heart. What he failed to do in time he wants to do in eternity. Unfortunately, such time and opportunity are gone.
Beloved, are you doing what you were created and recreated in Christ to do now or are pleasures and deceitfulness of riches of life robbing you of the divine call? Never forget that your time will one day expire. Once in eternity, the work opportunity ceases.
May the story of this rich man stir a radical burden in your heart to arise and do what you were called and created to do in the land of living.
Lord, show me mercy! I will not waste the opportunity of telling my father’s house the truth about the gospel during my lifetime. Give me the grace and strength to preach to every one of them in my lifetime.

Topic: ETERNAL THIRST
Text: Luke 16:24
"Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' NKJV
The mercy that this rich man requested from hell includes;
1. That Abraham should send Lazarus.
He knew that he could not leave hell to go and meet Abraham and Lazarus. Again, he could not ask Abraham himself to come over to him in hell. Instead, he requested that poor Lazarus should be sent to come and help him.
2. That Lazarus may dip his finger in water and cool his tongue.
The calling of Lazarus was to come and cool his tongue because of the torture of fire. While on earth, this man had all that he wanted. Now in eternity, his greatest need is water from the dipping of a finger. He has no more opportunity to meet his needs. In hell, he became a beggar, begging for the necessities of life. As simple as water is yet, he is now begging for a drop of water.
He was not asking for a cup of water. His request was for a finger drop of water. In hell, there is no water. It's a place of great thirst. The tongue is dry and needs to be quenched but no one can do it for those in hell. It's not just that there is torment and torture, hell leaves a man with an unquenchable thirstiness and dryness of the tongue. Even the tongue is dry because of the torment of flame.
Again, the torture in hell is with flame. The souls there are tormented by the flames of fire. The fire perpetually burns them. They are helpless in that place. Worst of all, this is an unstoppable and unquenchable torment. Eternally it continues. Oh, what a torture!
Hell is never a place for any living soul. It is the worst and gravest place ever to be. Being in hell is the second and worst death one can ever experience. To avoid this, Jesus tasted death for all men so that we could have life. But all who refused His sacrifice and continued to live in sin would have no option but to taste death for themselves.
Beloved, the Lord unveiled this story to impress upon our hearts the peril and peace of eternity. In life, one can be rich or beggar. However, the reverse could be the case in eternity. What is your decision today? Will you choose to be in Abraham’s bosom in New Jerusalem or eternally cry for a finger drop of water?
_*Lord be merciful unto my soul that I will never go to hell to experience the torture of fire. Give me the grace to continue to obey you.*_

Topic: ETERNAL SEPARATION
Text: Luke 16:23
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. NKJV
From the torture of hell, the rich man lifted his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. He could still see things and recognize them. He was seeing Abraham but it was from afar. Eternal separation has been made. Though they were waiting for the last judgment, yet temporarily they have been kept in a temporal place before the judgment. They do not have anything in common anymore. They are far from each other. The rich man was seeing them but it was from afar.
Do you know that if you are not saved or insist on doing the will of God, you will be separated from other saints? In eternity, Death separates men from men. It separates family members, kindred, and nations. It is a place of new beginnings with new people of the same nature. Those who received eternal life will be in the same place while those who refuse the gift of God in Christ Jesus will be in the place of torment.
The choice of either hell or Paradise or the bosom of Abraham begins while alive. It is a choice of what one believes, behaves, or does with the free gift of God’s salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who heard the gospel and accepted and live by it will eternally be with God after death but those who refuse the gospel of God will be in hell with the disobedient spirits.
It is my choice now in this material time that will determine my destination in eternity. Eternity is a place of reward and punishment based on what one did while on earth.
_*Lord, may You help me to be in Your glorious kingdom with Abraham and all Your saints*_
Eternity is a place of reward and punishment based on what one did while on earth.

TOPIC: THE RICH ALSO DIED
TEXT: Luke 16:22
So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. NKJV
Death is a common denominator. Both the rich and poor partake in it. It is an inevitable inheritance and adventure for all men. David defined it as the way of all men. Both great and small, wise and fool, learned and unlearned, adult and young, men and women, all must go that way of no returning.
The rich man also died. The rich man as we have seen is a man who has more than is necessary. He has all that is needed to make life comfortable. Clothing, food, and shelter are not his problem. He has them in excess. Has has enough money to buy whatever his eyes desire. This rich man in this story was dressed in a purple and white linen garment and lived sumptuously. He lived in the luxury and pleasure of whatever he wanted.
With all the wealth of this man yet, he died. His money could not buy him a long life. He has money to buy everything in this material world. However, there are things his money could not buy or do for him. Those things are solely from and by God. Life, Long life, health, wisdom, sleep, peace, protection, children, etc., are the things only God can give at His will. As good as money is, it cannot buy such things.
The rich man also died. A rich is a human being who has the opportunity of having things of life in excess. But he also experiences every ordeal of human pains. His wealth does not exempt him from death, sickness, or accidents of life. He must go the way of all men.
Unfortunately, many rich men do not know that they will one day die. I guess they know but they hardly live in that consciousness. The security, joy, and pleasure of riches would not allow them to think or see the reality of this divine appointment. They are captured by the deceitfulness of riches.
It was not just that the rich man died, he was buried. For Lazarus, he was carried by angels. But for the rich man he was buried. To be buried means the disposal of a dead body or the act or ceremony of putting a dead body into the ground or the sea. This implies that this rich man was put into the ground accompanied by a lot of ceremonies. There must have been a great ceremony for his burial because he had the money. Many people would attend the burial. Fellow rich men will likely honor his burial unlike that of Lazarus. It would be a wonderful celebration. Attended guests will be served sumptuous meals with quality souvenirs. He was buried implying he was thrown into the ground and well celebrated.
Despite all his wealth and riches, he went down below six feet alone. Only he made that lonely journey. His wife, children loved ones with all his possessions did not go down with him to the grave. He was buried and not carried by the angels.
Beloved, if you close your eyes to death now where will you go? Will you be buried or carried? Will men drop you into the grave or angels accept and carry you to a glorious abode? Make your choice now. When death comes riches and wealth will become useless. Beware!!!
I think this lesson calls for prayers. Please Kindly close your eyes to make a simple prayer regarding your eternal state.
*Lord, may men never only throw me into the grave without angels coming to welcome me home.*
