GOSEPA COMMENCES INSPECTION OF 250 WASTE COLLECTION POINTS
— Moves to strengthen waste management, curb indiscriminate dumping
The Gombe State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (GOSEPA) has commenced the inspection of 250 designated waste collection points across the Gombe State metropolis as part of renewed efforts to improve environmental sanitation, strengthen waste management services and curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The inspection exercise is aimed at assessing the current condition of the waste collection points, identifying areas requiring attention and ensuring the prompt evacuation of accumulated waste to maintain clean and healthy surroundings across the metropolis.
Speaking during the inspection exercise, the Executive Secretary of GOSEPA, Dr. Auwalu Baba Jada, said the initiative was part of the Agency’s continued commitment to improving sanitation service delivery and ensuring that waste collection points remain functional, accessible and properly managed.
Dr. Baba Jada explained that the exercise would enable the Agency to have an up-to-date assessment of the condition of the various collection points and facilitate timely intervention where necessary.
He further disclosed that GOSEPA would continue to work closely with Cosmopolitan Cleaners Limited, the company responsible for waste collection and environmental cleaning services in the metropolis, under the supervision and regulatory oversight of the Agency.
According to him, effective waste management requires sustained collaboration between the government, service providers, communities and residents, stressing that the Agency would continue to strengthen monitoring and supervision to ensure that waste is evacuated promptly and disposed of appropriately.
The Executive Secretary noted that the 250 waste collection points being inspected include facilities constructed by GOSEPA as well as additional collection points provided through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) programme.
He called on residents to make proper use of the designated collection points and desist from dumping refuse on roadsides, drainage channels, open spaces and other unauthorised locations.
Dr. Baba Jada reaffirmed GOSEPA’s commitment to protecting the environment and promoting the general wellbeing of residents in line with the efforts of the Gombe State Government to sustain a clean, green and healthy Gombe State.
The inspection team was led by the Deputy Head of the Sanitation Department, alongside the Planning/O&M Officer, Musa Ahmed Wakili, and the Information Officer, Abubakar Mohammed Tukur.
Residents who spoke during the inspection commended the Gombe State Government and GOSEPA for the initiative, describing the inspection of waste collection centres as a welcome development that would contribute to improved sanitation and environmental cleanliness across the metropolis.
They urged the Agency to sustain regular monitoring of the collection points and ensure that waste is evacuated promptly to prevent overflow, environmental pollution and indiscriminate dumping.
GOSEPA therefore reiterated its appeal to residents to support government sanitation efforts by properly bagging and disposing of their household waste at designated collection points and maintaining clean surroundings.
