Oyo Govt Issues Flood and Heatwave Warning to Residents

The Oyo State Government has advised residents to take precautionary measures as the 2026 rainy season begins, warning of possible flash floods, temporary road overflows, thunderstorms, and occasional heatwaves.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Engr. Dr. Ademola Aderinto, said heavy rainfall may lead to temporary flooding in some communities due to increased surface runoff. He urged residents not to panic but to avoid blocking drainage channels and waterways.

The government also warned against illegal dredging and indiscriminate waste disposal, noting that such activities could worsen flooding and damage infrastructure.

Residents are equally advised to prepare for occasional heatwaves, with temperatures expected to reach between 33°C and 35°C. People are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and remain in cool environments.

The state government reassured residents that environmental conditions are being closely monitored and urged everyone to cooperate by observing environmental safety guidelines.

Oyo Govt Flags Off Waste Segregation, Distributes Bins to MDAs

The Oyo State Government has officially flagged off the first phase of waste segregation across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), with the distribution of designated bins at the State Secretariat, Ibadan.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, is part of ongoing efforts to promote proper waste management and environmental sustainability across the state.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, explained that the bins are clearly labelled to ensure effective waste sorting. Each set includes separate containers for plastics and bottles, paper materials, and biodegradable waste—designed to support recycling and improve waste collection efficiency.

He described the programme as a significant step towards institutionalising environmental best practices within government establishments, emphasizing that MDAs must lead by example through strict adherence to proper waste disposal methods.

Aderinto further noted that the Ministry will intensify monitoring and enforcement to ensure full compliance with the waste segregation policy.

At the Governor’s Office, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, commended the initiative and called for sustained awareness to achieve a cleaner and healthier Oyo State.

Also receiving the bins, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, praised the effort and urged all MDAs to strictly comply with proper waste management practices.

The Oyo State Government reiterates its commitment to policies and programmes that protect the environment and improve the quality of life for all residents.

Hajj 2026: Oyo First Batch of Pilgrims Visit Historic Sites in Medina

The first batch of 2026 Hajj pilgrims from Oyo State on Tuesday embarked on a guided visit to historic Islamic sites in the city of Medina as part of their ongoing spiritual activities in the Holy Land.

To ensure a deeper understanding of the historical and religious significance of each location, the pilgrims were divided into groups during the excursion.

The tour, which forms part of the spiritually enriching exercises traditionally undertaken during Hajj, included visits to Mount Uhud, Masjid Quba, Masjid Qiblatain, and other notable sites.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, one of the coordinators, Hammed Adebayo, noted that the exercise aligns with the teachings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He added that pilgrims are encouraged to observe at least two rak’ahs of prayer at Masjid Quba as part of the spiritual benefits of the visit.

He further advised pilgrims to make necessary sacrifices for a rewarding Hajj experience and to adhere strictly to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in all their activities.

This visit highlights the commitment of Oyo State to ensuring a spiritually fulfilling and well-guided Hajj experience for its pilgrims.

OYRLEA Intervenes in Okeho Noise Pollution Case, Enforces Environmental Compliance

The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), in collaboration with the Pollution Monitoring and Quality Control Department of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, has successfully resolved a long-standing noise pollution complaint in Okeho.

The case was filed by Mr. Adelere Fatai Adebayo over excessive noise and emissions from a hotel generating set located close to his residence.

During an enforcement visit on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, OYRLEA officials conducted on-the-spot scientific measurements of noise levels and proximity to the residential area. Findings confirmed that the readings exceeded permissible environmental limits.

The Chief Scientific Officer, Mr. Arise Babatunde, validated the violation, after which the hotel manager, Mr. Peter Damilare, was directed to immediately relocate the generator to a compliant location away from residential buildings.
OYRLEA also warned that failure to comply may attract sanctions, including possible arrest, and urged residents to report any further violations.

The Chairperson of OYRLEA, Honourable Justice Aderonke A. Aderemi (Rtd.), reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting residents from environmental hazards:
“Environmental protection is not optional. We will continue to enforce compliance to ensure citizens live in a safe, peaceful, and healthy environment.”

This intervention underscores OYRLEA’s mandate to uphold the rule of law and safeguard public health across Oyo State.
