Plateau ADC Leadership Crisis Deepens as Chieftain Engr. Abdul-Majid Waziri Resigns
Jos, Plateau State | July 14, 2026
The protracted leadership crisis within the Plateau State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a new twist following the resignation of a prominent party chieftain, Engr. Abdul-Majid Lawan Waziri, MNSE.
For more than four months, the party has been polarized by two parallel leadership structures—one led by Farmer Dung and the other by Madam Hannatu Gagara—with both factions laying claim to the legitimate leadership of the party in Plateau State. Despite repeated concerns from party faithful, the ADC national leadership has yet to decisively resolve the impasse, a development that has continued to fuel uncertainty and internal discontent.
Against this backdrop, Waziri, a water resources and environmental engineer, formally announced his resignation from the party, attributing his decision to what he described as the steady erosion of party ideology, constitutional order, and internal democratic principles.
In his resignation letter dated July 13, 2026, and addressed to the Ward Chairman of the ADC in Abba Na Shehu Ward, Jos North Local Government Area, Waziri said he could no longer remain in a political environment where party constitutions, the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are routinely disregarded.
He maintained that the unresolved leadership crisis in Plateau State further reinforced his conviction that the party had failed to demonstrate the institutional discipline and commitment expected of a credible democratic platform.
According to Waziri, the problem extends beyond the ADC and reflects a wider challenge confronting Nigeria's political parties, where internal democracy and ideological commitment have increasingly given way to personal interests and factional politics.
He, however, clarified that his resignation should not be interpreted as an exit from politics.
«"My resignation from the ADC should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from politics or public service. I remain committed to contributing positively to democratic development, good governance, and the advancement of our society," he stated.»
Waziri thanked the party for the opportunity to serve under its platform and wished its members and leadership well in their future political engagements.
His resignation adds to growing concerns over the state of internal democracy within political parties as Nigeria gradually prepares for the next round of electoral activities.
