URGENT APPEAL FOR PROMPT GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION ON THE COLLAPSING BRIDGES AND CRITICAL ROAD ACCESS ROUTES LINKING KURGWI WITH NEIGHBOURING COMMUNITIES

His Excellency, Barr. Caleb M. Mutfwang

Subject: URGENT INTERVENTION REQUIRED TO PREVENT THE COMPLETE COLLAPSE OF BRIDGES AND ROAD CONNECTIONS AROUND KURGWI

Your Excellencies and Honourable Representatives,
The Nagan Youth Movement (NYM), Kurgwi, on behalf of the people of Kurgwi and the neighbouring communities that depend on the roads and bridges connecting Kurgwi to surrounding villages, respectfully brings to your urgent attention the increasingly dangerous condition of several bridges and road access routes within Kurgwi and its environs.

We are making this appeal at a time when the ongoing heavy downpour across Plateau State is significantly worsening the condition of our roads, bridges and drainage structures. Several bridges that serve as vital links between Kurgwi and neighbouring communities are gradually deteriorating and, in some locations, are already becoming extremely difficult and unsafe to cross.

The situation requires immediate government attention before a complete collapse occurs and lives are lost.

1. GADA DAYA BRIDGE – KURGWI WEST
The Gada Daya Bridge is one of the important links connecting Kurgwi town with neighbouring communities. The continued heavy rainfall has placed considerable pressure on the structure and the surrounding road.

The condition of the bridge and its approaches is becoming increasingly alarming. If urgent remedial measures are not taken, the bridge may become completely impassable, thereby cutting off residents who depend on this route for their daily activities.

2. GADA BIYU BRIDGE – KURGWI WEST
The Gada Biyu Bridge is another critical connection between Kurgwi and neighbouring settlements.

The deteriorating condition of the bridge and surrounding road infrastructure poses a serious threat to the free movement of people and goods. During heavy rainfall, the situation becomes even more critical.

We therefore call for an urgent technical assessment and immediate rehabilitation or reconstruction where necessary.

3. MAKOKO BRIDGE – KURGWI EAST
The Makoko Bridge is particularly important because it links Kurgwi with Npap and Turniang and serves as a major route for residents, farmers, traders, students and other members of the communities.

The progressive deterioration of this bridge is already restricting movement. Continued rainfall could worsen the damage to the point where the bridge becomes completely inaccessible.

The Nagan Youth Movement therefore appeals for immediate intervention to safeguard this vital connection before it is completely lost.

4. BOX CULVERT ON THE SHENDAM–LAFIA HIGHWAY
We also draw particular attention to the box culvert along the Shendam–Lafia Highway, which provides an important connection between Kurgwi and Konggoeyen, Kwande, Bakin Ciyawa, Namu, etc to Nasarawa State.

Because this route is connected to a major highway, the condition of the culvert deserves urgent attention from the relevant federal and state authorities.

A failure of this structure would not merely inconvenience residents of Kurgwi; it could significantly disrupt movement between several communities and affect transportation, agricultural activities, commerce, education, healthcare and other essential services.

5. GA̱GAR BRIDGE
The Ga̱gar Bridge is also among the structures requiring urgent assessment and intervention.

The cumulative effect of the persistent rainfall and inadequate maintenance is putting considerable pressure on the bridge and its approaches. We respectfully request that the relevant authorities inspect the structure and take preventive measures before the situation deteriorates beyond manageable levels.

THE HUMAN AND ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES

The bridges and roads mentioned above are not merely physical structures. They are lifelines connecting communities, families, farms, schools, markets, health facilities and places of work.

When these routes become inaccessible, the consequences are severe.

Farmers may be unable to transport agricultural produce to markets. Traders may lose access to customers and suppliers. Students may struggle to reach their schools. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and sick persons may face serious difficulties accessing healthcare.

Emergency services may equally be delayed when residents need urgent medical or other assistance.

Most importantly, if any of these bridges collapses completely, residents may be forced to seek dangerous alternative routes or become temporarily cut off from neighbouring communities.

We therefore believe that preventive intervention at this stage will save the government enormous resources that would otherwise be required for emergency reconstruction after complete collapse.

OUR APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT AND RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS

The Nagan Youth Movement respectfully calls upon:

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the relevant agencies responsible for federal roads and infrastructure, to urgently assess the box culvert along the Shendam–Lafia Highway and other relevant infrastructure under federal jurisdiction.

The Plateau State Government to urgently deploy competent engineers and relevant agencies to assess the Gada Daya, Gada Biyu, Makoko, Ga̱gar and other vulnerable bridges and road approaches.

The Senator representing Plateau Southern Senatorial District to use his legislative and constituency responsibilities to facilitate urgent federal intervention where necessary.

The Member representing Mikang, Qua’an-Pan and Shendam Federal Constituency to urgently raise this matter at the National Assembly and facilitate intervention through relevant federal agencies.

The Member representing Qua’an-Pan South Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly to bring the deteriorating infrastructure to the attention of the State Government and relevant ministries and agencies.

The Chairman of Qua’an-Pan Local Government Council to urgently mobilise the appropriate local government departments and relevant stakeholders to assess the affected locations and undertake immediate emergency measures within the council's capacity.

Traditional rulers, community leaders, development associations, contractors, philanthropists and other relevant stakeholders to join hands with government in ensuring that these critical routes remain accessible.

A CALL FOR URGENCY, NOT DELAY

The Nagan Youth Movement wishes to emphasise that this letter is not intended merely as a complaint. It is a preventive and constructive appeal from concerned citizens who recognise the danger developing before us.

We do not want to wait until a bridge collapses, a vehicle plunges into a flooded section, a patient cannot reach a hospital, a farmer loses access to his farm, or an entire community becomes isolated before urgent action is taken.

Government intervention is most valuable when it prevents disaster rather than responds to it after lives and property have already been lost.

The people of Kurgwi and the neighbouring communities have a legitimate right to safe and functional infrastructure. These roads and bridges are essential to the social and economic life of our people, and their continued deterioration requires a coordinated response from all levels of government.

We therefore appeal to all the authorities addressed in this letter to treat this matter as an emergency infrastructure and public safety issue and to take prompt action before the situation becomes catastrophic.

CONCLUSION

The Nagan Youth Movement, Kurgwi, remains committed to peaceful advocacy, community development and constructive engagement with government at all levels.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, our elected representatives, the Qua’an-Pan Local Government Council and other stakeholders in the development of our communities.

However, the present condition of these bridges and access roads demands urgent and visible intervention.

The time to act is now.

A collapsed bridge can be rebuilt, but a life lost through preventable infrastructure failure cannot be restored.

We therefore urge all relevant authorities to act swiftly in the interest of Kurgwi, Qua'an-Pan LGA, Plateau State, and all other communities that depend on these critical routes.

Please accept the assurances of our highest regards and our commitment to constructive partnership with government for the development and safety of our people.

Yours faithfully,
For: NAGAN YOUTH MOVEMENT (NYM), KURGWI
