PROFESSOR BEN AHMED CHINDO: AN ERUDITE SCIENTIFIC ACADEMIC SCHOLAR.
Professor Ben Ahmed Chindo: A Distinguished Scholar and Trailblazer in Neuropharmacology
He is a distinguished academic and a leading expert in pharmacology, particularly neuropharmacology. He currently serves as a Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Nigeria.
Professor Chindo obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy, M.Sc. in Pharmacology, and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, in 1990, 1999, and 2006, respectively. He further honed his expertise in molecular neuroscience through postdoctoral training at the University of Otago, New Zealand (2006–2007), and the University of the Pacific, USA (2009–2010). During this period, he gained extensive experience in cell culture techniques, extracellular and patch-clamp electrophysiology, and stem cell differentiation for neurodegenerative disease treatment—research areas vital for addressing conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease.
Professor Chindo commenced his career at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, Nigeria, in 2001, where he rose to the rank of Associate Research Professor of Pharmacology. Since 2007, he has also served as an adjunct lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. In 2012, he was appointed Professor of Pharmacology at Kaduna State University, where he has played a crucial role in the academic and administrative advancement of the institution.
A prolific scholar, Professor Chindo has supervised and mentored seven Ph.D. and twelve M.Sc. candidates. Notably, three of his former Ph.D. students have attained professorial ranks—one as a full Professor and two as Associate Professors. Additionally, he has contributed to the academic community by assessing and recommending scholars for promotion to the ranks of Associate Professor and full Professor in Nigerian universities.
With an impressive record of over 90 scientific publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, Professor Chindo has significantly influenced global research. His scholarly output includes:
Google Scholar citations: 1,747
h-index: 22
i10-index: 38
ResearchGate citations: 1,512
ResearchGate h-index: 21
He has also authored three widely read book chapters in neuroscience. His research focuses on medicinal plants traditionally used to manage neurological and psychiatric disorders.
As a Visiting Professor at Otto von Guericke University, Germany, Professor Chindo has collaborated with international scientists, contributing groundbreaking discoveries, such as:
Scientific validation of Ficus platyphylla for epilepsy management. His findings, published in high-impact Elsevier journals, have paved the way for a potential patent on an herbal epilepsy treatment.
Development of a novel animal model for schizophrenia, published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, an esteemed Elsevier journal.
An accomplished researcher and speaker, Professor Chindo has presented at conferences and seminars worldwide, including in the United States, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Ghana.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biotechnology (Kaduna State University) and an Associate Editor and reviewer for numerous high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
During his tenure as Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Kaduna State University, he led the faculty to achieve:
Full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) (with a 100% score in Pharmacy course content).
Provisional accreditation from the Pharmacists’ Council of Nigeria (PCN) in 2018 and 2019.
These achievements facilitated the graduation and induction of the university’s first and second cohorts of pharmacists in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Professor Chindo is a fellow of prestigious organizations, including:
International Brain Research Organization (IBRO)
Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT)
West African Society for Pharmacology (WASP)
He is also a member of several distinguished professional and scientific bodies, including:
Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN)
Nigerian Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA)
Nigerian Society for Neuroscientists (NSN)
