CONDEMNING EMIR SANUSI’S DISREGARD FOR LAW AND ORDER IN KANO STATE
On behalf of the Academic Ambassadors for Good Governance (AAGG), we strongly condemn the actions of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who openly defied a lawful police directive during the recent Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Kano State. The police commissioner had issued a clear ban on traditional events, including the Durbar procession, to ensure public safety amidst the ongoing Emir leadership dispute. Despite this, Emir Sanusi proceeded with the procession, disregarding the order.
This defiance led to chaos, violence, and the tragic loss of lives, highlighting the dangers of allowing any individual, especially those in positions of power, to act above the law. The Nigerian Constitution, under Section 4 and Section 214, mandates the enforcement of law and order by the police, and Emir Sanusi’s actions undermine these constitutional duties.
While traditional rulers play an important role in preserving cultural heritage, their actions must align with the rule of law. Emir Sanusi’s disregard for the law not only endangered citizens but also sent a harmful message that legal authority can be bypassed for personal gain.
The Academic Ambassadors for Good Governance (AAGG) call for accountability, urging that no individual regardless of their title should be above the law. We stand firm in our belief that respect for the rule of law is essential for peace and stability in our society.

Wannan mataki an dauke shi ne don kare rayuka da dukiyoyin al’umma. Sai dai, Gwamna Abba Kabir da Sanusi Lamido Sanusi sun karya wannan doka, inda s**a gudanar da harin-doki (Hawan Sallah) ba tare da izini ba, lamarin da ya janyo asarar rayuka da jikkatar da mutane da dama.

Muna yabawa hukumomin tsaro a Jihar Kano bisa jajircewarsu na kokarin tabbatar da zaman lafiya duk da yawaitar matsaloli.

Sai dai muna bukatar a dauki matakin gaggawa don gurfanar da Gwamna Abba Kabir da Sanusi Lamido Sanusi bisa rawar da s**a taka wajen haddasa wadannan asarar rayuka da raunata mutane. Dole ne a tabbatar da adalci don dawo da amana da kuma hana sake afkuwar irin wannan cin zarafi.

Muna kira ga jama’ar Kano da su kasance masu lura da kuma bukatar lissafi daga shugabanninsu, Jihar Kano tana bukatar shugabanci nagari da ke fifita jin dadin jama’a fiye da nuna isa da babakere.

1. Bincike da Gaskiya – A gudanar da cikakken bincike kan mutuwar da kuma jikkatar da mutane sakamakon wadannan haramtattun ayyuka.

2. Adalci – A gurfanar da dukkan jami’an gwamnati da s**a karya dokar ‘yan sanda tare da jefa rayukan jama’a cikin hadari.

3. Bayani Cikin Gaskiya – Gwamnatin Jihar Kano ta fito fili ta yi bayani game da yadda take ci gaba da yin watsi da rayukan jama’a.

Ba za mu gajiya ba a fafutukarmu ta neman adalci da shugabanci nagari. Mutanen Kano sun fi dacewa da shugabanci mai tausayi da adalci.

Coalition of NGOs in Kano State Under Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) Condemns Government’s Flagrant Abuse of Power

Kano, Nigeria – March 30, 2024 – The Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Kano State, operating under the Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG), vehemently condemns the reckless actions of the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for their blatant disregard for the rule of law and the safety of citizens.

Recently, the Kano State Police Commissioner issued a lawful ban on all public activities during Eid celebrations, citing credible intelligence to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order. This directive was a necessary measure to protect lives and property. However, Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi openly defied this ban, proceeding with an unauthorized horse-riding event that resulted in tragic loss of lives and left many injured.

This irresponsible act is not an isolated incident. Barely two days into office, Governor Abba Kabir’s administration embarked on needless and brutal demolitions of properties, leading to the deaths of over 25 innocent citizens. Recently, the same government carried out another round of demolitions in Rimin Zakara, claiming more lives. Shockingly, the Governor has publicly declared that he has no regrets for these actions, demonstrating a disturbing lack of empathy and accountability.

We commend the security agencies in Kano State for their professionalism and commitment to maintaining order in the face of escalating tensions. However, we demand immediate action to hold Governor Abba Kabir and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi accountable for their roles in these preventable tragedies. Justice must be served to restore public trust and deter further abuse of power.

We call on the people of Kano to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders. Our state deserves governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its citizens over political grandstanding and reckless displays of authority.

The Coalition of NGOs under GIGG stands firm in demanding:
1. Accountability– A full investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by these unlawful actions.
2. Justice – Prosecution of all officials involved in violating the police ban and endangering lives.
3. Transparency – A public explanation from the Kano State Government on its repeated disregard for human lives.

We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and good governance. The people of Kano deserve better.
