KEPA Moves Against Direct Discharge of Sewage Into Drainages
The Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) has warned residents against the direct discharge of human waste into drainages and water channels, saying offenders risk prosecution before a mobile court.
Acting General Manager of KEPA, Yahaya Yakubu Victor, gave the warning while briefing journalists in Kaduna, stressing that the agency had reactivated its weekly surveillance patrols to enforce proper sewage management and prevent disease outbreaks.
He said the move is part of the state government’s renewed efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment under the administration of Governor Uba Sani.
Victor disclosed that surveillance teams recently visited Badarawa, Tudun Nupawa, and Ungwan Romi in Kaduna North, Kaduna South, and Chikun Local Government Areas, where disturbing discoveries were made.
Some houses were found without septic tanks and were discharging sewage directly into water channels, he said. These channels eventually serve as sources of irrigation for farmers, unknowingly exposing the public to contaminated water that can spread diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
He described the practice as a serious environmental and public health threat, warning that KEPA would no longer tolerate such violations.
We have started issuing abatement notices to defaulters and will not hesitate to sanction or seal non-compliant properties to safeguard public health, Victor added.
A public health practitioner, Ibrahim Usman, commended KEPA renewed action, describing the practice of discharging sewage into drainages as hazardous and unacceptable.
He said the act contributes to crop pollution, disease transmission, and ecosystem degradation, urging residents to adopt proper waste management practices.
KEPA proactive steps will go a long way in promoting a clean, safe, and livable environment for all, Usman said.
