Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria

Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) was established in 1964 and the vision under the leadership of Maj Gen Victor Ezugwu - the new Director General is to be the hallmark for research and manufacturer of military equipment leaveraging on local content that meets global standards. DICON R&DC is one of the six Directorates dedicated to research and development of new products. Other functions of the center include;

a. Carry out pure and applied scientific research

b. Carry out Prototype engineering production

c. Provide consultancy services for other DICON Departments and external organisations.

The DICON R& DC is equipped with the state of the art facilities /equipment which have diverse application and is open to the public for use at a minimal fee. Some of the equipment include:

A) Four balls friction and wear testing machine

B) Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA).It used for measuring the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of engineering materials under stress

C) Metallurgical Muffle Furnace for heat treatment of metals

D) Spectromaxx metal Analyzer .It gives the chemical composition of metals and alloys

BRIEF HISTORY OF DEFENCE INDUSTRIES CORPORATION OF NIGERIA

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria(DICON) was established on 1 August 1964 by an act of parliament Number14 and revised as the DICON act, in chapter 94 of the laws of the federation 2004.
The establishment of the corporation was with the objective of manufacturing ordnance materiels for the Nigeria Armed Forces and other security agencies among other responsibilities. Accordingly, the ordnance Factories Complex (ORDFAC) was built at Kakuri between 1964-1970 through a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Fritz Werner of Germany. Fritz Werner constructed the building and installed the equipment in ORDFAC. The Company also trained Nigerians on the operations and maintenance of the Factory. DICON performed creditably on commencement of operations and was able to meet the needs of the Armed Forces during the Civil War.
