“I Paid ₦10,000 to Walk Through Airport With Co***ne” — Convicted Smuggler Ezenwanne Exposes Drug Route, Missing Exhibits, and Shocking Arrest Ordeal in Kyari Trial
In a gripping testimony before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, convicted drug trafficker Emeka Ezenwanne laid bare the inner workings of a co***ne smuggling operation — from airport bribes and international exchanges to mysterious evidence tampering allegedly involving operatives of the now-disbanded IRT unit linked to suspended DCP Abba Kyari.
Ezenwanne, who is currently serving a two-year sentence at Suleja Correctional Centre, appeared as the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Kyari and four of his men. What he told the court was a shocking insight into Nigeria’s porous security system and how a major anti-narcotics case became mired in controversy.
The Co***ne Exchange in Addis Ababa
“On January 15, 2022, I flew to Addis Ababa using Ethiopian Airlines,” Ezenwanne said. “There, I received ten sachets of co***ne from two men who had just arrived from Brazil. They handed me the drugs at the airport lounge. One of them even took my photograph after the exchange.”
The Bribe That Opened the Gates
Returning to Nigeria through the Enugu International Airport on January 19, Ezenwanne revealed how immigration officials never searched him — instead, they demanded a bribe.
“They told me to pay for a smooth search. I handed over ₦10,000 and walked through,” he testified.
A Surprise Arrest by Men in a Sienna
As he met his associate, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe, outside the airport terminal, Ezenwanne’s calm return turned into chaos.
“As soon as I approached my companion, a Sienna vehicle pulled up. Men jumped out. I was bundled into the car,” he recalled. “I shouted, ‘Jesus! Jesus! Is this how it ends?’”
The Missing Drugs and Reduced Weight
Ezenwanne revealed that their bags were seized and searched at a remote police station, and later transferred to the IRT office in Abuja. But something wasn’t right.
“When we saw our bags again on January 25, the weight was clearly reduced. I used to have ten sachets, but only eight were left. My associate noticed missing items too.”
Even more disturbing, he said some of the sachets tested negative for co***ne when they were handed over to the NDLEA.
No Direct Encounter with Kyari
Under cross-examination by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), lead defense counsel to Kyari, Ezenwanne made a striking admission.
“I did not see the first defendant (Kyari) at any point. I never met or spoke to him,” he said, but insisted he and Umeibe were detained despite offering to surrender the drugs during arrest.
Ezenwanne’s dramatic confession may go down as a historic turning point in Nigeria’s war on drugs—spotlighting not only international trafficking routes, but also exposing how easy it is to bribe one’s way through airport security, and how drug exhibits allegedly went missing while in police custody.
The trial continues, with the nation watching as truth, corruption, and justice collide in what may become Nigeria’s most sensational police scandal ever.
