Governor Sule Calls for Stronger Africa-Caribbean Partnerships on Climate Action, Sustainable Development

NEW YORK — Nasarawa State Governor, His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, has called for stronger collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean in addressing shared development challenges, particularly climate change, sustainable infrastructure and innovative financing.

Governor Sule made the call in New York while speaking at the high-level “Redefining Influence, Accelerating Action” dialogue, organised on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week by the UN Global Compact Networks of Nigeria and the Caribbean, in partnership with the Lagos State Government.

The forum focused on creating an Africa-Caribbean agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals in an era of climate risk.

The Governor stressed the need to move beyond discussions and translate influence, partnerships and international commitments into practical actions that improve the lives of citizens.

He emphasised that subnational governments have an important role to play in mobilising investment, strengthening resilience and creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic development.

Governor Sule also highlighted the importance of innovative financing in helping developing economies respond to climate-related challenges. He noted that climate resilience should be integrated into development planning, infrastructure and investment decisions, while encouraging stronger partnerships among governments, the private sector, financial institutions and international development organisations.

A major highlight of the event was the Africa-Caribbean dialogue on climate-risk financing, particularly the special session on “Insuring Our Coastlines,”

The gathering brought together senior government officials, business leaders, development institutions and other stakeholders from Africa and the Caribbean.

The event provided Governor Sule an opportunity to contribute the perspective of a Nigerian subnational government to a broader global conversation on sustainable development, while also engaging with potential partners on investment, climate resilience and development financing.

The Governor’s participation formed part of Nigeria’s wider engagement at the 81st UN General Assembly, where Nigerian governors and other senior officials have been exploring opportunities to strengthen international partnerships, attract investment and advance sustainable development priorities.
