SISTERS AT WAR

CHAPTER EIGHT

I'm so sorry this is coming late. School work has been choking and I barely have time for myself. I don't know how consistent I'd be with this , but if try.

GABRIELLA~

My voice trembled a bit and my heart beat increased as I talked to Daniella. I tried to sound confident, intimidating and cold. I was quite sure she didn't notice I was scared. It felt cruel that I was doing this to her, but I didn't think I had a choice. I was scared, I was afraid and even terrified. The thought of being home alone with her drove me to the point that I wanted her to disappear forever.

I didn't care what others would think, I just couldn't breath peacefully if we sleep alone under the same roof. I just had a break from my nightmares, I would not be able to get a wink of sleep if I had let her in.

As I bolted the door, I leaned against it as hot balls of tears rolled down my cheek. My head was messed up. I had to treat my twin sister like trash so I could save myself and the guy I liked was so cold to me yet sort of close to the outcast of the class? Was this what Aunt Grace told me about? Was it manifesting already?

It was confusing. At some point, I'd feel bad, remorseful and even pity for Daniella. At some other time, I'd just feel as if one day, she would be the end of me. The thought made me cringed. We used to be sweet sisters, until she made her first move. Daniella wasn't Daniella anymore, she had become the darkness to my light and if I let her, she'd kill my light.

I wiped my tears away and let out a sigh. There was no point crying, my tears would not change anything. Daniella's issue had been decided, I just needed to confront Daniel and ask him why he was being so cold to me. Mum wouldn't allow us date, but at least, we could be friends.

I dragged my feet towards the stairs and suddenly I stopped in my tracks. If something bad happened to Daniella, would I take responsibility? I wanted her to disappear, at the same time, I didn't want her to disappear.

I hurried back to the entrance and peeked through a small window close to the door. She wasn't outside anymore. Her backpack was gone too. I was scared, but my comfort was that her disappearance was good for me. If anyone asked me, I would tell them she didn't come home from school. Mum and dad would surely believe me and they want her gone too, so that was settled.

I cheered myself up with that thought and I headed to the stairs again. My stomach rumbled. I was hungry so instead of going to my room, I went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

After having noodles and fried egg for dinner, I watched tv for a while and then after making sure the doors were locked, I headed to my room to study and do my homeworks.

Midway into my homeworks, my phone blared. It was mum calling. A smile spread on my lips.

"Hello Mum"

"How are you girls, hope there is no problem?" She asked. That was weird. She never asked about Daniella whenever we were home alone. My heart trembled. I couldn't bring myself to tell her Daniella wasn't in the house and worst still, I didn't know where in the world she was. A beast could have eaten her up, I mean, the world was a dangerous place especially at night. Or maybe her soul had been sucked by an evil spirit like I had watched in a movie.

"We....we...we are.....fine, yeah, We're fine" I couldn't help but stutter.

She probably didn't notice my uneasiness or she decided to ignore it.

"Good, Liam is coming home tomorrow" Mum said.

"Really mom?" I jumped out of my bed suddenly. I was so excited. Liam was coming home? It was awesome news, enough for me to have a sweet dream tonight.

"Yes, take care of yourselves" Mom said and she hung up. She usually said "take care of yourself." What was the whole "yourselves" about? When did she start caring about Daniella? I shrugged off the thought and focused on the great news.

I hurried completed my homeworks and then laid down on my bed. I couldn't stop myself from thinking about Daniel and I didn't like the relationship he shared with Daniella. They were not friends obviously, but he ignored me for her? It was frustrating. Again, Aunt Grace was right. Daniella had to disappear.

DANIEL~

Daniella sat on the pavement at the entrance of Christabel's house. She looked like she was going to pass out the next minute. For some reason, Christabel was struggling with the doorknob.

"Need some help with that?" I asked and she rolled her eyes at me saying, "As if you can handle it."

I scoffed and replied, "you think I can't handle it? Whatever, hand it over. Someone's dying"

Daniella glared and me, but I didn't care. Wasn't she dying anyway? I mean, she looked like she was dying.

"I'm not dying. You're sounding like I have a terminal disease and I have just few minutes left to live" she managed to say. She sounded like she was annoyed, but she didn't have the strength to pick up a fight with me.

After waiting for eternity, Christabel unlocked the door.

"Hey goat, help her with her backpack" She ordered. I wasn't bound to, but for some reason, I didn't argue with her. I grabbed Daniella's backpack, which was sitting beside her on the pavement and Christabel helped her up.

"Will your parents be fine with having me over?" Daniella asked.

"Her parents are never around. I've not seen them once since they moved" I answered.

"Yeah, they're working. They hardly come home. Dad went on a business trip to the US and my mum is handling an important case at Rivers state"

"Wow, your mum is a legal practitioner? That's so nice. My parents go on business trips too, but not often" Daniella said.

"She's lonely, her parents doesn't have time for her. That's why she's always cranky and she's always picking on me" I added just to p**s Christabel off. Before I knew it, she punched my shoulder and I groaned. She was a pro.

"It's not nice to play with people's emotions" The serious expression on her face made me apologize immediately. I had crossed the line. I wasn't much different from her, maybe that was why I picked on her weakness, to make myself feel better. Christabel left for the living room without saying a word. I was left all alone with Daniella who was now dozing off on the couch.

As I fixed my gaze on her, I wondered why her sister did not let her into the house. That was cruel, wasn't it? But then, no family was perfect. Every family had thier own issues, but our families weren't handling it well.

Christabel's parents were always away for work, Daniella and her sister had something going on, and my parents? They were processing their divorce.

Christabel appreard from the corner, carrying a plate of steaming noodles. "Here, eat this" she said, stretching the plate of noodles to Daniella. It was quite dark so she didn't know Daniella had fallen asleep.

"She's asleep" I said.

"Oh. Wake her up and make sure she eats the noodles. I'd turn on the lights in the meantime" She dropped the plate of noodles on the table and took the stairs. Not long after, the lights came on.

I carefully tapped Daniella's arm and she blinked. "Food is ready" I whispered.

She groaned as she sat upright. I gave her the plate of noodles and told her to eat up. I had played my part, I didn't want Christabel's trouble.

My phone blared. It was mum. I excused myself to take the call, but I kept staring at my phone. I didn't pick the call. I was mad at mum. How could she say she wanted to divorce dad? That was heartbreaking enough for me, what did she want again? Make me feel awful? I was annoyed. I switched off my phone and headed back to the living room. Daniella should be done eating by now. I was shocked to see the plate of noodles lying on the center table, untouched. Daniella was asleep on the couch. She ought to eat and use her medicine like the nurse instructed.

"Hey wake up" I said, tapping her lightly.

She was already burning up. She opened her eyes slowly and stared at the noodles lying on the table weakly.

"Here, eat this" I said as I picked up the plate of noodles and stretched it close to her.

"I can't eat, I've got no appetite" She replied.

"You have to eat so that you can use your medicine," I pressed.

She didn't budge so I just held the plate firmly and scooped some noodles onto the fork.

"Open your mouth" I said. She hesitated before opening her mouth to take the noodles.

I had never done this before. I never had female friends and trust me, I never did this for my male friends. And she wasn't even a friend, or was she?

She was able to eat half of the plate of noodles and that wasn't too bad.
Just then, Christabel came downstairs. She had already changed out of her uniform.

"Has she taken her medicines?" She asked after sighting the left over noodles.

"Not yet. I had to feed her. She had no appetite"

"Where are the medicines?" She asked and Daniella pointed at her backpack. I opened it and brought out her medicines.

"Have it" I said, handing over a bottle of water to her. She stared at the medicines before swallowing them.

It was funny that she was scared to swallow medicines.

"Hey Mister, it's late. You should get going" Christabel frowned at me. She sounded upset a bit, just somehow, not really.

"You think I want to stay over? With two girls in the house?"

"Then get out already" She half yelled.

"I'm going, I'm going" I chuckled.

DANIELLA~

The sound of the c**k crow made me blink my eyes. Was it daybreak already? I couldn't even tell if it was the first c**k crow or not. I shifted a bit and my arm landed on someone. I stiffened. I didn't understand what someone else was doing on my bed.

I held my breath. Was it a ghost? I slowly turned my face to the other side to see who it was. Behold, it was Christabel. That was when I realized I wasn't even in my room. I should have known. The room was different even though it was quite similar to mine.

I breathed a sigh of relief. I was safe. I was in safe hands. My headache was gone and I was not feeling weak like yesterday. I yawned and stretched myself. I needed to get back home. Hopefully, Gabriella would let me in because, I had to prepare for school.

"Hey," I called tapping Christabel lightly.

"Hmm" she mumbled and opened her eyes.

"Sorry for disturbing you and thanks for everything, but I think I need to go now," I whispered. She mumbled something I couldn't make out before getting out of bed and leading me to the main entrance. She unlocked the door and I stepped outside.

"Bye" she waved sleepily and I smiled. I could call her my friend or maybe I should hold on a little bit.

I dialled Gabriella's number as I walked to our house. She didn't pick the phone. I was glad the street lights were still on.

When I got to the gate, I called Gabriella again. This time, she picked up and when I told her I was at the gate, she just hung up on me. For a minute, I thought she wouldn't come out so I was prepared to go back to Christabel's place, but then, I heard her unlocking the gate.

We didn't say anything to each other until we got inside.

"Liam is coming today" She said, before taking the stairs.

Liam was coming home. I was so excited. I dropped my backpack on my reading table, grabbed my towel and walked straight into the bathroom. I pulled off my uniform and tossed it into the laundry basket. I brushed my teeth, took my bath and dressed for school.

In a haste, I arranged my books into my backpack and headed downstairs. I had to get to school early to check up on the homework I had missed.

When I was done, I flung my bag across my shoulder and hastened my steps out of my room. I was making my way down the stairs when I heard Gabriella's voice.

"I hope you enjoyed your stay outside," Gabriella said and I turned to face her. She had that evil smirk on her face.

"None of your business," I snapped feeling p**sed. Was it something to celebrate or be happy about? She was a pro at trampling on my feelings.

"Wow, you have the guts to talk back because Mom and Dad are not around," she said and I hissed. Trust me, I hissed unconsciously.

She was angry and the next thing she did was push me off the stairs.

SISTERS AT WAR

CHAPTER SEVEN

BY SEGUN FRIDAOZ A.K.A AUTHORESS HANY

DANIELLA

After the siren blared, Mrs Lawal said, "Write short note on the colonial economy to be submitted next class." Could we just do a day without any homework? It wasn't possible, was it?

The next thing on the timetable was literature. I was glad I completed my homework before the whole drama last night. Mr Babs hated excuses. "A serious student does not give excuses" He would say.

I was skimming through my literature homework when Gabriella's voice distracted me. "Mum and dad will be away for two weeks" She said, her two hands, resting on my table and her eyes stealing quick glances at Daniel. He didn't even notice her presence because he was engrossed in the science fiction he was reading, the one he refused to lend me.

Mum and dad won't be home for two weeks? That meant nothing but trouble. Home alone with Gabriella was the worst. Maybe this was the perfect time to run away.

"You better not do anything funny" Gabriella added before leaving for her seat. How did she know I was planning to run away? Or was she thinking something else?

Mary barged into the classroom, she was breathing heavily. A smile curled on her lips as she made her way to the center of the class.

"Mr Babs is in a meeting so we aren't having literature class today" She announced. Damola was the first to let a cry of excitement. I was quite sure she had not done her homework yet.

"Plus, the principal said we can go home if we want to" she added and all my classmates cheered. I was glad because I was starting to feel a bit drowsy. I placed my head on the table and shut my eyes. Could I just disappear to some place? Home alone with Gabriella would be hell.

***
"Don't you think we should wake her, she has slept for too long already. It's getting late"

"Let her be. She's sick. She should get enough rest. She'd go home when she wakes up"

"It's late already. She can get some rest at home. What if the school gate is locked?"

"That's true. Should we wake her then?"

These voices floated in my head, I thought it was a dream until I felt a light tap on my back.

"Daniella, wake up" I recognized the voice. It was Christabel. I slowly opened my eyes and raised my head from my table. I relaxed my back completely on my chair and rubbed my eyes.

"What time is it?" I asked.

"5:30pm" Daniel answered.

What? 5:30pm? I jumped to my feet.

"Relax" Christabel said.

"I can't relax. You don't understand" I packed my books into my backpack in a hurry. I still didn't give up on the science fiction so I decided to try my luck again.

"Can you lend the book?" I faced Daniel.

"What book?"

"The science fiction"

"Then will you lend me your notes?"

"For what?"

"I missed some topics"

"Alright, deal"

My heart was bubbling in excitement as he handed over the science fiction to me. I would just lock myself up in my room and bury my head in the science fiction.

"Here's my literature note. Whatever you do, do not copy my homework" I warned.

"I'm a pro. He won't even notice" Daniel smirked.

Christabel hit his head hard and half yelled, "she said you should not copy her homework. Why are you so shameless? Isn't it enough that she lend you her note?"

Daniel's forehead creased.

"It's trade by batter"

"There is an exclusion clause or didn't you hear it?"

"Like I was going to copy her homework for real" Daniel rolled his eyes.

I couldn't help but laugh. It was the first time I was laughing heartily in a very long time.

"My God! You have dimples" Daniel exclaimed.

"Are the two of you friends?" I asked, ignoring his comment.

"Sort of. I met this goat in the estate. He's my neighbor" Christabel said and Daniel shot her a glare.

"Cool"

Friendship was a nice thing, but I had been denied that since I was eight.

"How are you feeling now?" Christabel asked and I wondered why they were being so nice to me. I thought we weren't going to talk after the clinic thing.

"I feel a bit better thanks" I replied and she nodded.

"Don't forget to take your medicines" A mishevous smile appeared on Daniel's lips as soon as he said that and I rolled my eyes. He was so annoying.

I felt something vibrating in my backpack. It was my phone. My eyes widened when they landed on the caller ID.

"Oh no!" I groaned. It was Gabriella. I swiped to receive the call, I knew I was in for it.

"Where the hell are you D?!" She yelled over the phone. Without even waiting for me to reply, she added, "You're on a trip with your fellow witches or what? Or you plan to kill me before mum and dad gets back?"

Those words broke my heart. The first part won't have meant so much to me, but the second part? It meant everything. She didn't believe me and whose fault was it? It was mine. I was naive. I couldn't utter a word, even my fingers started to tremble. Despite how I was feeling, I didn't want to act weak. That would make her pick on me more.

"I'm on my way home. I slept off, that's why" I said quietly. I could feel my voice trembling as I spoke.

"You slept off? You wanna use your sickness as an excuse? If you're not home before six I'm gonna lock you out, then it'll be impossible for you to hatch your plan" She yelled again and hung up. I wondered why she was very agitated. She was always like that whenever we were home alone.

"That was your sister yeah?" Christabel asked. I nodded.

"I wonder why she's so sweet to everyone except you. She's very mean to you" She added.

"I have to go now" I just wanted to avoid that conversation. And Gabriella wasn't just mean to me, she was cruel. Everyone in my family except Liam was cruel.

***

I stood at the bustop for over five minutes, but there was no single taxi in sight. It was frustrating. If I didn't get home before six, Gabriella would definitely not let me into the house. I had spent the night outside before. That was in junior school. We were home alone then too.

At last, I was able to flag down a taxi.

"Mulian estate" Daniel's voice came from behind as I was about to get in. I knew Daniel lived in the estate. He was the jerk that scared hell out of me that night.

I was in a hurry so I got in anyway without turning back to look at him. I was about to slam the door when someone held it. Daniel had taken the front seat so I wondered who it was. Surprisingly, It was Christabel. Did she live in the estate too?

"You look in Mulian estate?" I asked in surprise and she nodded. Daniel was her neighbor, what did I expect? Daniel lived in Mulian so obviously, she did too. For some reason, I was excited.

At last, the taxi driver stopped at the main gate of the estate. The three of us got off the taxi. I had worn my hoodie again because I started to feel cold.

"Here's your change" the taxi driver said, handing over a hundred Naira to me. I tucked my hands into my hoodie pockets. I walked past the main gate. Daniel and Christabel were walking behind me silently.

I was starting to feel weak again. Was it time to take my medicines already? I sat down on the walkway pavement, resting my head on my arms.

"You want a piggy ride?" Daniel offered and I gave him a dirty look.

"It's ok if you don't want" He shrugged.

"You can't make it home like this, can you?" Christabel interfered. I already knew she would not give up. Arguing with her was a waste. Honestly, I knew I couldn't make it home alone and that too before six. I couldn't even tell if it was past six already.

"Alright, on a second thought" I said. Christabel took my backpack while I got on Daniel's back, wrapping my arms around his neck.

"What kind of food do you eat?" He asked with sarcasm laced in his voice, but I didn't say anything. I was just weak and annoyed because I couldn't even give him a befitting reply. I wasn't fat, yet he was complaining about my weight? Did he expect me to be as skiny as those female kpop idols who looked like they were starved?

"This annoying goat. Don't mind him Daniella. He's just like that. He will push you to the edge if you mind him" Christabel said. I loved her reply. Annoying goat. A good nickname for him.

Immediately we entered the gate, I sighted Gabrialla standing at the entrance of the house. A smile was curled on her lips. I had seen this smile many times. She smiled like this when she was up to something mischievous. Her smile disappeared as soon as she saw me with Daniel and Christabel, but then, quickly, her expression changed and she was full smiles again. She hated seeing me with people, not to talk of the guy who ignored her.

"Hey Dan" She said with a grin.

"I can't remember telling you my name is Dan" he replied coldly. Yeah, I loved that reply. It was funny that Daniel ignored the most popular girl in school and then he was always around the school's outcast. It was starting to look like only what would happen in a novel, but this was real.

He dropped me off at the entrance and immediately, I sat on the pavement.

"Your backpack" Christabel dropped it beside me on the pavement.

"Thank you guys" I smiled.

Daniel left without saying anything, but Christabel was hesitant. I could see her lingering around our gate.

Gabriella smirked as she opened the door.

I stood up and picked up my backpack.

"Really? Do you think I'm gonna let you in? she scoffed. She glanced at her watch.

"Time is 6:15pm D, I told you to be home by six!" Her voice was cold and intimidating.

"You can't leave me outside in this state" I managed to say.

"Have a nice night outside. I'd be glad if you freeze to death. Then I won't have to worry about you ever and I think my nightmares would leave too." she disappeared into the house. I could hear her bolting the door from inside.

Again she left me hurt and speechless with her words. Was she just mean to me because everyone was or was she really afraid of me? I couldn't even tell what was going on in her head. It was annoying and frustrating.

I sat down on the pavement. I didn't want the tears already forming in my eyes to drop.

It was already getting late, the sun was setting.

I had to get something to eat.

With my backpack stuck to my shoulders, I started towards our gate and I almost screamed out loud when I suddenly bumped into Christabel. I had totally forgotten that she didn't leave.

"You scared me" I whispered holding my chest.

"So your sister won't let you in for real?"

"You heard everything?"

"Yes"

I sighed.

"Why is she so mean to you?"

"I don't want to talk about it"

"Whatever, a sick girl shouldn't be roaming around or do you have somewhere to stay?"

The tears I didn't want to drop had started flowing freely down my cheek. I didn't want to remember what made everybody hate me. That night was a terrible memory and I couldn't even delete such a terrible memory, it was suffocating.

"A sick girl shouldn't cry" Christabel patted my shoulder. No matter how much she did, more tears just flowed freely down my cheek.

"My parents won't be around tonight. Do you mind sleeping over at my place?" She asked.

"Why are you being so nice to me?"

"I hate it when people pick on someone without a tangible reason"

"What if they have a tangible reason?"

"They can't have a tangible reason. They're just bullies. Did you offend everyone in the class? Or everyone at school? No! You might have some issues to settle with your sister, it doesn't give them the right to bully you"

"So it's okay if Gabriella bullies me?"

"I don't know you guys back story. But bullying isn't the answer to whatever might have happened between you two"

"You think so, even If I had tried to kill her in the past?"

"Does bullying solves that?"

"I don't know"

"Did you try to kill her in the past?"

I went silent.

"It's okay if you don't want to talk about it. It doesn't matter to me. And honestly, you don't look like someone who can hurt a fly. That's my gut feeling"

I smiled. She was on my side despite the fact that we just met and she knew nothing about me. Wasn't she even scared that I could be a dangerous person? I was even scared of myslef sometimes because I couldn't help but think at times that I was evil.

"Let's go to my house" She said, taking my backpack from me.

We walked a distance not too far from my house. "That's Daniel's house" she pointed at the blue house on the right. Just then, Daniel came out of the house.

"He's not a bastard" Christabel mumbled.

He was surprised to see us.

"I was about to come to your house. What are you doing with her?"

"Her sister kicked her out of the house"

"For real?"

"She's staying with me"

"Whatever, I'm coming along"

SISTERS AT WAR

CHAPTER 6

DANIELLA~

I couldn't tell how much I slept, but assembly was over when I woke up. I was glad because attending that morning gathering would have surely driven me nuts, not to talk of my health.
Luckily, I was not having any class until after break.

I didn't feel any better. My head was still pounding and my eyes were watery. I pulled of my hoodie. I used my hand to adjust my hair to the back of my ear while I left the other part to cover some part of my face.

My whole body was aching badly. I lifted my eyes to check what my seat partner was up to. He was busy reading a book. I focused my attention on the title and that was when I figured that he was reading a science fiction. My eyes widened in excitement. "You read science fictions too?" I asked, gently taking the book from him and hoping that he wouldn't mind.

"Yup"

"I've not read this volume, can you lend me when you're done with it?"

Then I noticed he was staring at my hand. I totally forgot about why I put on my hoodie in the first place. I withdraw my wounded hand away from the table, you could say I was trying to hide it and then I held the book in my other hand.

"Can you lend me when you're done?" I asked again. Trust me, if not for the science fiction, I wouldn't have spoken to him.

"Nope" He took the book from my hand and I frowned. Was it a big deal to lend out a book? It was my fault. I should have restrained myself, but I couldn't even afford to start regretting my action. What was more important was I was feeling extremely cold and I had to wear my hoodie again. I pulled the hood over my head and rested my head on the table. The painkiller didn't help. I needed to go to the school clinic, but then, I was feeling dizzy and I didn't think I could make it there on my own.

No one in the class would help me. Who would want to help an outcast unless they wanted to become outcasts themselves.

I could feel someone's tap on my back and it took me ages to raise my head. My eyes met with Daniel's. "Are you okay?" He asked.

"Mind your business" I said weakly. I wanted to rest my head on the table again but he pulled my hood.

"You're shivering. Are you sure you're okay?" He asked again.

Was this cold jerk talking to me? Did he want to become an outcast?

I was planning an aggressive reply in my head, but I couldn't even execute it because I was interrupted.

"You're stubborn, aren't you?" One of the new girls said placing her hands on my table and looking at me intensely. What was her name again? Yeah, Christabel.

"Can you guys leave me alone?" I said weakly. I had a terrible headache to handle, they were making it worse.

"See, she's stubborn. Let's leave her alone and when she eventually collapse, perhaps we'd call the cleaners to take her to the clinic. Let her get the attention she wants to get" Daniel said.

"Shut up" I flared. Did he just call me an attention seeker? What in the world? I held my forehead. I wished I had not shouted.

Christabel Ignored his comment and her eyes turned back to me.

"Come on, stand up. Let's go to the clinic" She didn't look like she was joking. The expression on her face was so serious, I cloud tell she'd pull me up and drag me to the clinic if I didn't budge. It was nice to have people look out for me even if Daniel was a jerk, but I was scared for them. What if everyone turned against them. They were new students and it was too early for that.

My classmate were already looking in our direction. I was sure they were wondering what the new kids were doing with me.

"Stay away from that girl. It'll save you a whole lot of stress later" Damola said.

"And no one asked for your opinion" Christabel retorted. Turning to face me again, she said, "come on, let's go" she tried to pull me up. I didn't bother to resist at all and I was touched. I was glad there were people who cared about humanity.

As soon as I stood up, I felt so dizzy and the last thing I saw was the ground before I blacked out.

***
"Mum, I didn't do it" My eight year old self said to my mum who was now alone with me.

"Just keep quiet! Keep quiet!" She screamed at me and stormed out of the room. The door slammed and I flinched. She even bolted it from behind. I couldn't get out. I curled up to a corner and wrapped my arms around my legs.

"I didn't do it" I sobbed.

"I really didn't do it"

"I didn't do it" I mumbled in my sleep repeatedly.

"Daniella" Someone je**ed me awake. I let out a loud gasp as I snapped my eyes open. I was covered in sweat and I was breathing heavily. I was in the clinic and the person who je**ed me awake was Christabel. Daniel was there too, he stood beside her.

"Are you okay?" They asked in unison and I nodded.

"How are you feeling now?" Christabel asked.

"A bit better" I sat upright. The headache had reduced a bit and I didn't feel so weak. My eyes landed on the drip close to the bed I laid on. That was a perfect explanation.

"You were mumbling in your sleep. Are you a criminal?" Daniel leaned against the bed frame. I shot him a deadly glare. What? A criminal? Was that the latest rumour about me?

"What? You kept mumbling you didn't do it so I was wondering what exactly you were accused of" He added. He wasn't exactly wrong, but what was his deal anyway?

"Mind your business!" I snapped.

"Why are you disturbing her mister, can't you see she's not well. And yeah, it was a bad dream, big deal?" She pulled Daniel's ear.

"Hey, let go. I can't beat up a girl you know"

"That's the advantage I have over you"

She pulled his ear a bit harder before letting go. I wondered why Daniel wasn't cold towards her. Were they friends before?

Daniel's forehead creased as he rubbed his ear. "You're lucky I respect girls so much if not.....And yeah, it wasn't a bad dream. Looks like one traumatic experience" He said.

"Whatever. Can you just shut up?" Christabel pursed her lips.

"Fine" He shrugged.

The nurse came by. "That was fast. The drip is done" She said. Slowly and carefully, she tried to take out the needle from my arm and I winced. It was painful. She went to dispose everything and came back with some medicines.

"Take two of this, one of this and two of this" she instructed pointing at each one she mentioned.

"Have you eaten?" She asked.

"No"

"Get her something to eat. After eating, make sure you take the medicines" She emphasized before leaving us.

"I'm not an errand boy" Daniel said.

"You?" He said referring to Christabel.

"Not you, CHRISTABEL" she glared at him.

"Whatever, get her something to eat. I'd just wait here"

"What? There's no way I'm leaving you here with the sick girl" She retorted. Sick girl sounded like I had a terminal disease.

"Hey, you shouldn't come to school when you are sick you know" Christabel faced me and I faked a smile. Honestly, I felt a bit uncomfortable because it was the first time I had people this close. It freaked me out.

"She's trying to prove to everyone that she's a super woman" Daniel said.

"Can you just shut up?!" I shouted. I was p**sed. Why was he was stepping on my toes.

"No, I can't shut up and you aren't gonna do anything about it"

"Well, wait and watch"

I stood up from the bed and pushed him. It was a slight push because I didn't have that much energy.

He grabbed my hand instantly and pinned it behind my back.

"Ahh!" I yelped in pain. What in the world was wrong with this jerk? It was like he was taking out all his anger on me. What did I do wrong? It was annoying.

"Whoa whoa whoa, Daniel take your hands off her" Christabel frowned with her hands folded on her chest. He let go of my hand and I quickly tuned to my back and smack his head.

He shot me a glare. I wasn't intimidated. I glared back at him.

"I thought you said you can't beat a girl. What was that?" I said still glaring at him.

"Did I hit you?" He fired back at me.

"You pinned my hand behind my back. What will you call that? Assault!"

"More like self defense" He rolled his eyes.

"What? Self defense?" I was starting to raise my voice again.

I guessed Christabel smelled trouble lurking around so she interfered.

"Daniella, go back to bed while I go get lunch" She sounded like an instructor. I slowly made my way back to the bed and laid down flat, still keeping my eyes on Daniel.

"And Daniel? You're coming with me" She grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the room before he had the chance to protest.

I let out a sigh. So much drama.

Christabel and Daniel came back with lunch for the three of us.

She placed a plate of steaming noodles and egg beside me on the bed. My stomach rumbled at the sight of it. I had still not eaten anything since last night.

"Eat this and take your medicines. We're having history after break" She said. They got noodles for themselves too. Unconsciously, my lips curved into a smile as I picked up the food.

The three of us ate in silence.

After eating, I picked up the medicines and I squeezed my forehead in discontent. Five tablets? Wasn't that too much? I hated medicine and now the nurse expected that I would swallow five tablets? Was she playing with me? The sight of the medicines alone made me feel like throwing up already.

"Are you in a kinda staring contest with the medicines?" Daniel's voice jolted me back to reality. He had this mischievous smirk that irritated me to the bones. He was fond of picking on me, wasn't he? was it a big deal not to like medicine? Medicine wasn't food, only a crazy person would like it. I glared at him and he bursted into laughter.

"Don't tell me you're afraid of taking medicines" He said between hiccups of laughter.

I ignored him. He was really annoying. I closed my eyes, put the medicines in my mouth, then flushed it down with water. It was disgusting and the smell, awful! I hit my chest continuously so that I won't end up throwing up. I took a deep breath. Finally the medicine battle was over. I looked at my watch. It was almost time for class and I just guessed that we were probably not going to talk to each other after this.

It would have been nice to have them as friends, but better be safe than be sorry.

"We can go to class now," I said after relaxing for about ten minutes. I was feeling better. The headache had disappeared and I felt a little bit energized.

We headed back to the classroom and as soon as I pushed the door open, everywhere went silent. I was used to it.

"Helping an outcast means becoming an outcast, not so guys?" Damola's voice broke the silence.

"You want to become one?" Christabel asked.

"I'm talking about you guys"

"You'd save yourself a whole lot of stress by staying away from us. Who cares about who's an outcast and who decides who's an outcast" Christabel hissed.

"Daniella must have bewitched you" Damola said.

"Say that again" Christabel looked at her straight in the eyes. She looked really intimidating. Even Damola knew that she had crossed the limit. Christabel wasn't someone to be picked on easily and she didn't seem afraid of anyone either. Damola rolled her eyes and then went back to flipping through her note.

My eyes ran across the class and landed on the person whose reaction I was eagerly waiting for. Gabriella. She never liked seeing me with other people.

"Hey D, how are you feeling now?" Gabriella asked in a nice voice. What? Was I in a dream land? I looked at her with disgust. Then I figured out she must be pretending because of Daniel.

"I'm fine" I retorted. I placed my head on my table immediately I got to my seat.

"Take care" Christabel said before going to her seat.

"Thanks" I said.

Mrs Lawal, the history teacher strolled into the class.

"Class greet" Mary ordered.

"Good afternoon ma" the whole class chorused.
