“Our mandate in tertiary education goes beyond certificates; it is about competence, relevance, and the deliberate alignment of learning with the real needs of industry.”
In line with this commitment, we convened a tripartite strategic engagement with GAC Motors, led by Mr. Wale Akinwade, and senior academic leadership from Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). The meeting set a clear framework for a progressive collaboration focused on specialised, industry-relevant training in modern vehicle component manufacturing, assembly, diagnostics, and advanced engineering maintenance.
This initiative represents a significant step towards embedding industry-standard technical skills directly into the engineering curricula of both institutions. Through structured workshop training, applied learning, and hands-on exposure to servicing and maintenance, the partnership is designed to strengthen technical capacity and prepare our students to compete effectively within the global automotive and engineering space.
By deliberately bridging theory with practice, this collaboration aims to produce engineering graduates who are academically sound, technically proficient, entrepreneurial, and highly employable, fully aligned with our vision of self-reliance and relevance in an evolving labour market.
While LASU and LASUSTECH already possess modern laboratories and highly qualified faculty, this partnership will strategically leverage existing infrastructure alongside new industry inputs to deliver shared value for students, GAC Motors, and the broader Nigerian automobile ecosystem.
GAC Motors has further assured that the initiative will provide robust capacity-building and economic empowerment opportunities, including practical training locally and internationally. Exceptional students and selected academic staff will also have pathways into the LAGRIDE and LAGBUS maintenance and ownership scheme, creating direct routes to professional advancement and enterprise development.

“Ideas shape policy, and policy shapes the future of societies.”
I attended the 2026 Public Lecture of the Lagos State Professorial Chair in Tax and Fiscal Matters held at the University of Lagos, a platform dedicated to advancing knowledge-driven policy discourse.
In my address, I spoke on the importance of sustained investment in tertiary education as a foundation for effective governance and national development, particularly in the context of the lecture theme, “Navigating Nigeria’s Tax Reform: Implications for Fiscal Federalism and State Autonomy.” I emphasised that taxation is not merely a revenue mechanism, but a social contract that must be informed by research, institutional capacity, and intellectual rigour.
I highlighted the Lagos State Government’s commitment - under the leadership of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu - to strengthening tertiary education through deliberate funding, stable academic calendars, research support, and respect for institutional autonomy. I noted that the Lagos State-funded Professorial Chair reflects our belief that universities must remain active partners in shaping public policy and solving real societal challenges.
I concluded by reaffirming that the future of governance will always depend on the quality of ideas we nurture today, and that Lagos State will continue to invest massively in tertiary institutions as engines of innovation, thought leadership, and sustainable development.

“When excellence is nurtured with purpose, sustaining progress becomes inevitable.”
I formally declared open the Three-Day Retreat for the 13th Governing Council and Management of Lagos State University (LASU), where I conveyed the warm greetings and unwavering support of Mr. Governor and Visitor to the University, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
In my address, I emphasized the central role of the Governing Council, under the leadership of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Kwame Ogala, SAN, OFR - in providing strategic leadership, ensuring institutional stability, and working in synergy with Management to advance the vision of Lagos State University. I underscored the importance of trust, clarity of roles, and shared responsibility as foundations for effective university governance.
I further drew the attention of the 13th Governing Council and Management to critical pillars that must guide LASU’s trajectory over the next four years - sound governance, financial discipline and sustainability, staff and student welfare, alumni engagement, strategic partnerships, and the delivery of quality, relevant education aligned with the developmental aspirations of Lagos State.
This retreat represents a timely opportunity for alignment, reflection, and deliberate planning in line with the mandate of Mr. Governor as outlined during the inauguration of the Governing Council.
I am confident that the outcomes of this engagement will strengthen LASU’s capacity to remain resilient, forward-looking, and globally competitive, as the University continues to fulfil its mandate as Lagos State’s flagship institution of higher learning.

“When the walls that house knowledge are strong, the minds within them grow even stronger.”
I joined Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, as he commissioned the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at Lagos State University (LASU), another critical infrastructure that embodies our unwavering commitment to transforming the academic landscape of Lagos State.
This magnificent edifice, the largest university library project in the entire West African sub-region, stands as a bold testament to the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration, which prioritizes education and technology as foundational pillars for the future of our State.
In my address, I emphasized that the objectives of this project are clear and profound, it is set to foster global competitiveness by bridging research and policy, elevating intellectual capital, and cultivating a culture of inquiry among our scholars and students.
We recognize that sustained academic progress requires more than infrastructure; it requires stability, and as a government, we remain steadfast in creating an enabling environment that allows learning, innovation, and excellence to thrive.
Special appreciation goes to Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for this visionary project; to our Special Guest of Honour and Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON; my esteemed colleagues in the State Executive Council; the management, staff, and students of LASU for their remarkable presence, contributions, and the colour they added to the ceremony.

“When vision finds willing hands, institutions are transformed, and futures are secured.”
I had the honor of representing Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the commissioning of the CIBN Bankers Hall at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, a state-of-the-art 160-seater auditorium generously donated by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
This legacy project, dedicated to the Department of Banking and Finance, is a shining example of what can be achieved when purposeful vision meets responsible action. It reflects the power of Corporate Social Responsibility executed with foresight, relevance, and tangible impact.
In my address, I challenged the leadership and students of LASUSTECH to ensure that the Bankers Hall becomes a benchmark, not just for physical infrastructure, but for ideas, innovation, academic excellence, and national relevance.
Kudos to the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria for this outstanding contribution. You have given far more than a building; you have made a timeless investment in the minds that will shape our economy.
As a government, we remain open to partnerships that strengthen our institutions, empower our youth, and build a more competitive and globally relevant educational future for Lagos.

“The future of education in Africa will be defined not just by technology, but by how deeply we anchor learning in our culture, our values, and our shared humanity.”
It was an honour to serve as Special Guest of Honour at the 23rd Annual Lecture and 18th Annual Post-Doctoral Award Ceremony of the Fafunwa Educational Foundation (FEF), a respected NGO founded in 1995 in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa, CON, NNOM, Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and Youth Development and the first Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission.
Themed “Re-inventing Teacher Education for Culturally Rooted and AI-Enhanced Pedagogy in Nigeria,” the event reflected FEF’s longstanding commitment to advancing educational research, awarding scholarships to outstanding students of education, fostering innovation, and promoting active dialogue between professional educators and policy makers.
In my address, I highlighted our administration’s unwavering drive under the visionary leadership of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to reform tertiary education holistically in Lagos State. I noted that teacher education is being redefined, not only in curriculum content, but in delivery approach, educator orientation, and mindset. I referenced the strategic transmutation of key institutions, LASUED, LASUSTECH, and the soon-to-be-launched University of Medicine and Health Sciences, as intentional investments to enhance teacher preparation, deepen educational research, and build a robust workforce for a technology-driven and health-conscious future.
I commended the Board of Trustees and Academic Committee of the Foundation for sustaining this impactful platform and assured them of our government’s openness to meaningful collaboration. I also charged the awardees to recognise the honour bestowed upon them as a call to responsibility, to carry forward the torch of excellence into classrooms, policy rooms, and into the hearts and minds of learners across Nigeria and beyond.
