Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

This is to inform all that in response to the Ebola outbreak in Lagos, and in an effort to protect our staff and the community we serve, the American Corner, Lagos (Barack Obama American Corner) will be closed until September 1, 2014. We will continue to monitor the situation from Government reports, International Aid agencies, and other sources here in Lagos, and are hopeful that we will be able to re-open with low risk on September 1st. BOAC will be running a Summer Reading Program tagged 'Make a Splash: Read' for children between 6 and 12 years from August 11-29 2014. The program will hold every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12 noon.
The Information Resource Officer of the US Consulate - Malore Brown will be reading to the children on August 11, 2014 by 10am.
BOAC will be having a round table discussion on the ABCs of Entrepreneurship with Dayo Oluwole, a Business Consultant on 19th June 2014 by 12 noon at the Ovie Brume Foundation. Dayo runs a very successful CSR Consulting outfit on Lagos mainland and has a wealth of experience in setting up and running a business.
We will also be sharing some facts on U.S Efforts to strengthen Entrepreneurship.

16 Students visited BOAC and had a session on how to study in the US

BOAC had a mobile reading workshop with Primary Six pupils at Ijero Primary School Ebute Metta. They taught the pupils how to use the Amazon Kindle.
BOAC will be hosting 60 Students from Timakh College Alagbado today and we will be discussing the steps to studying in the US.

Today at the Ovie Brume Foundation: The American Corner hosts Ms. Hilary Renner, Public Affairs Officer at the US State Department. Ms. Renner will plant a tree and give a talk about Environmental Issues. This event atarts at 3:40pm and is open to the public.
