MATCH REPORT

LIMAN'S STRIKE SEALS IT FOR LOBI STARS IN FIERY PRESEASON TEST

Under the blazing midweek sun at McCarthy Stadium, Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi continued their preseason ascendancy with a gritty 1-0 win over visiting Basira FC of Lafia in the second leg of their friendly double-header on Wednesday, 10th September 2025.

The encounter sparked into life from the opening whistle as the Pride of Benue seized early control, dictating the rhythm and pinning their opponents deep into their own half.

Nazir Mohammed came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute, unleashing a thunderbolt from the edge of the box that was heroically deflected for a corner, but the ensuing set piece was cleared, keeping the contest finely poised.

The visitors’ woes deepened in the 20th minute when Richard Teryila was given his marching orders after a reckless challenge on Ahmadu Liman earned him a second yellow, leaving Basira FC to battle the remainder with ten men.

Despite dominating proceedings and weaving intricate moves through the efforts of Suur Kumaga, Bidemi Owoku, Liman, and the ever-threatening overlapping runs of Valentine Egiga, Lobi Stars went into the break frustrated and goalless.

Coach Abubarka Bala shuffled the deck at halftime, introducing fresh legs and the moment came just after the hour mark. Azeez Tijani’s blistering shot was spilled by the goalkeeper, and Liman was quickest to react, firing home the rebound in the 61st minute to hand the Alia Boys a deserved lead.

Lobi Stars continued to dominate, keeping Basira pinned in their half, but were unable to add to the tally before the final whistle confirmed the win.

Speaking after the match, Technical Adviser Abubarka Bala praised his side’s development:
“We’re not just building a team, we’re shaping an identity. The boys showed hunger, tactical discipline, and unity. With more of these tests, we’ll be ready to fire when the season kicks off.”
