When I got my first period, I thought I was bleeding to death.
No one had explained what was happening just silence and shame.

Now as a mum, I choose a different path.

Before we talk about pads or cramps, I teach my kids body safety.
Because when their bodies start changing, they also become more vulnerable.

Here’s what I teach them before every family visit:
✅ No forced hugs
✅ No touching private parts
✅ Tell me if someone says “don’t tell”
✅ Your body, your rules.

We also practise spotting unsafe behaviour:
🚩 Secrets
🚩 Isolation
🚩 Ignoring boundaries
🚩 Bribes

This isn’t about fear it’s about freedom through awareness.
Start the conversation. Your child’s first period should come with confidence, not confusion.

👉 Share this with a mum, save for later, and send to the family group chat.
Your words could change a child’s life.

I will never forget the day Gabby leaned over during dinner and asked,
"Aunty, is it normal to have white stuff in your pants?"

She was just 8.
Her voice was quiet, almost shy. I could tell she had been holding onto that question for a while.

I asked where she heard about it, and she shrugged.
Then she whispered, "I Googled it… because I did not know who to ask."

That moment stayed with me.
Not because she asked the question but because she was alone in it.

This is the age when their bodies start changing.
Even if they do not have the words, their bodies are already speaking.
And if we are not talking to them first, the internet will.

I did not grow up having these conversations.
Most of us didn’t.
But right then, I knew Gabby and girls like her needed something different.

So I went home and brought out Blooming Girl.
We started reading it together during.

That little book opened the door to so many honest and gentle conversations.
She asked questions. She laughed. She nodded like, “Ohhh, that makes sense now.”

Now Gabby knows what discharge is.
She understands what to expect when her period comes.
She is not scared. She is not ashamed.

And me? I have made it my mission to never let another little girl feel confused, dirty, or left to figure it out on her own.

We do not need to wait for them to come to us.
We can meet them where they are early, kindly, and with the right tools.

Blooming Girl helped me do that.

If you do not know where to start, that is a great place.

Puberty is a time of big changes—physically, emotionally, and socially. Helping your child understand what’s happening to their body can boost their confidence and strengthen your bond. Here’s what they need to know:

✨ 1. Voice Changes (for Boys):
Their voice might crack and deepen—it’s normal! Reassure them it’s just a sign of growing up.

✨ 2. First Period (for Girls):
Talk openly about periods, what to expect, and how to prepare. Make it a conversation, not a lecture.

✨ 3. Growth Spurts:
Sudden changes in height, shoe size, and body shape can be exciting but awkward. Remind them it’s all part of their unique growth story.

✨ 4. Skin and Hair Changes:
Pimples and oily skin? Body hair in new places? Teach them about hygiene routines to stay confident.

✨ 5. Emotional Ups and Downs:
Mood swings happen! Encourage them to talk about their feelings without fear of judgment.

💡 Pro Tip for you mama's:
Open conversations about puberty reduce fear and build trust. Normalise these changes and celebrate their journey to adulthood.

EXAMPLE 1: Playing with Adults
Obedience: An adult relative insists, “Sit on my lap while we watch TV,” and the child feels uncomfortable but obeys.
Consent: Teaching the child to say, “No, thank you. I’ll sit over there,” and letting them know they have your full support.

EXAMPLE 2: School Discipline
Obedience: A teacher says, “Keep quiet and face the wall!” even when the child wants to explain what happened.
Consent: Empowering your child to politely say, “Excuse me, ma, can I explain what happened?” while still being respectful.

EXAMPLE 3: Church or Community Events
Obedience: “Go and let Pastor hug you to say thank you for the gift!” even if the child looks uneasy.
Consent: Teaching the child, “If you’re not comfortable hugging, you can say thank you with a smile or handshake instead.”

EXAMPLE 4: Touching Someone Else
Obedience: A child is told, “Go and play with your little cousin!” even when the child’s cousin clearly shows discomfort.
Consent: Teaching your child to ask, “Can I play with you?” and respect the answer if it’s “No.”

EXAMPLE 5: Physical Punishment
Obedience: A child does something wrong, and instead of explaining, the parent shouts, “Go and bring the cane now!” The child obeys, but they don’t understand what they did wrong.
Consent: The parent explains calmly, “What you did was wrong, and here’s why. Next time, let’s do this instead.” This approach teaches accountability, not blind obedience.

Consent is a fundamental skill that empowers children to understand and protect their personal boundaries. It's never too early to start teaching this critical lesson. Here’s how to help your child grasp why it’s okay to say “No” to hugs or touches, even from people they know:. Here's how you can explain why it’s okay to say "No" to hugs or touches:

1️⃣ Our Bodies Are Our Own
Explain to your child that their body belongs to them, and they have the right to decide who gets close.

2️⃣ Feelings Matter
Tell them it’s okay to say “No” if they feel uncomfortable—even to family members.

3️⃣ Practice Polite Alternatives
If they don’t want a hug, they can offer a wave, high-five, or a smile instead!

4️⃣ Empower Their Voice
Encourage them to speak up when they feel uneasy. Make sure they know you’ll always listen.

Teaching consent isn’t about fear; it’s about giving children the confidence to protect their personal space. 💪
