Millions of years ago, powerful underwater currents sculpted channels deep beneath the Nigerian ocean floor. Sediments cascaded, levees built up on either side, and a complex geological archive was quietly formed, layer by layer, kilometre by kilometre.
Nobody saw it happen. But it left a record.
And that record? It could change how we develop Nigeria's deepwater oil fields.
At the NAPE June Technical/Business Meeting, Earth Scientist BUSARI Mumini Olarewaju, PhD will present his research on the Geomorphology and Evolution of a Pleistocene Submarine Channel-levee Complex in Deepwater Nigeria - Implications for Reservoir Modeling and Field Development Strategy.
Using high-resolution 3D seismic data, his team mapped a 45 km ancient channel system, tracing how it evolved from wide, wandering U-shaped pathways into tighter, levee-bound corridors. They identified how deep-seated faults shaped its course. They extracted the parameters that make reservoir models more accurate and development strategies more precise.
This is the kind of science that turns geological curiosity into commercial value.
