BENUE GOVERNORSHIP 2027: THE TIME FOR KWANDE IS NOW!

Benue State is made up of three major tribes - Tiv, Idoma and Igede - spread across 23 Local Government Areas, with other minority groups. However, Tiv people for a reason of population, geographical spread have had advantage over other tribes in determining who becomes the Governor of the State. Since the creation of Benue state in 1976, the Tiv people who constitute over 80% of the population, voting strength and landmass have produced elected Governors.

HISTORY OF ELECTED GOVERNORS IN BENUE STATE

Since its creation on 3rd February, 1976, Benue State has produced elected Governors in the following order:

1. Late Apollos Aper Aku (October 1979 - December 1983)
2. Late Moses Orshio Adasu (January 1992 - November 1993)
3. Sen. Dr. George Akume (May 29, 1999 - May 29, 2007)
4. Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam (May 29, 2007 - May 29, 2015)
5. Chief Samuel Ortom (May 28, 2015 - May 29, 2023)
6. Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia (May 29, 2023 to date)

THE ROTATION AMONG TIV POLITICAL BLOCKS

These Governors came from the five major political blocks of Tiv land:

- Kwande: Kwande and Ushongo LGAs
- Jechira: Vandeikya and Konshisha LGAs
- Jemgbagh: Gboko, Buruku and Tarka LGAs
- Sankera: Ukum, Logo and Katsina-Ala LGAs
- MINDA: Gwer-East, Gwer-West, Guma and Makurdi LGAs

The rotation is clearly illustrated as follows:

1. Kwande - Late Apollos Aper Aku
2. Jechira - Late Moses Orshio Adasu
3. Jemgbagh - George Akume
4. Sankera - Gabriel Suswam
5. MINDA - Samuel Ortom
6. Jechira (2nd time) - Hyacinth Alia

WHY KWANDE MUST PRODUCE THE NEXT GOVERNOR

From the above illustrations:

1. Late Apollos Aper Aku was the pioneering elected Governor of Benue State 43 years ago.

2. After the forceful termination of Aku's administration by the military, the other four blocks have all produced elected Governors. It therefore became a common feeling that the 2023 Governorship slot should restart from Kwande. This strong belief inspired Kwande sons like Chief Terlumun Akputu, Tersoo Mnenga, Tersoo Mark Hanmation, Engr. Nick Wende, Engr. Terver Atsar, Terwase Orbunde, and Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, among others, to contest during the 2023 APC Governorship Primaries. Unfortunately, they all met brick walls.

In 2023, the then Governor, Samuel Ortom led the PDP to cede the seat to Jechira, and Sen. George Akume, then Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs and now Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), led the APC family to follow the same decision. Their action was taken out of sympathy, compassion and in the spirit of proportionate justice, to allow Jechira to complete the tenure that was truncated during Adasu's regime in 1992.

3. Nevertheless, While ceding the position to Jechira in 2023, the people of Benue assured Kwande of the next turn in Government House in 2027 after a Jechira Governor in 2023. And here comes the right time for a Kwande Governor! Same justice! same fair play!

To translate this promise into reality, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has unanimously produced Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, as its flagbearer for the 2027 Governorship race.

Recently, the Supreme Council of Kwande Elders, popularly known as "Ityo I Nongor Atu" in Tiv language, hosted Chief Aondoakaa in Adikpo and endorsed him as the sole Governorship candidate of both Kwande Barakuv and Kwande Barazov worldwide for the 2027 race. Over one thousand elders gave him their Ancestral blessings to brave all odds, calling on all Benue people to come out en masse and vote for him for a greater Kwande. Public commentators have rated the blessings Aondoakaa received as one of the highest in Tiv cosmology. At the same meeting the "Ityô I Nongor Atu" declared, affirmed and solicited for a single tenure of four (4) years from the people of Benue State, just enough for their son to complete the tenure of the Late Ape Aku.

Chief Aondoakaa, a well-trained and experienced lawyer, practical democrat, seasoned politician and businessman, tested and proven worthy in character and performance, comes in fulfillment of the promise made by Benue political Stakeholders to Kwande in 2023. We hereby present one of our best Mike Kaase Aondokaa, SAN, for election as Governor of Benue State in the 2027 general elections.

AONDOAKAA STORMS KWANDE, RECEIVES BLESSINGS OF ELDERS

By James Ian

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate for Benue State in the 2027 elections, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, has received the blessings and endorsement of traditional elders, community leaders and stakeholders from Kwande and Ushongo Local Government Areas, who pledged their support for his governorship ambition.

The gathering, convened yesterday by the Movement for the Actualisation of Kwande Gubernatorial Ambition 2027, brought together prominent elders and leaders from various clans across the two local government areas in a show of unity, solidarity and commitment to the aspiration of their son.

In his welcome address, the convener of the movement, Wantaregh Ikem Leonard, welcomed leaders and elders from the various clans to the gathering. He expressed appreciation to the PDP for listening to the aspirations of the people and giving one of their own the opportunity to contest for the governorship of Benue State in 2027.

Presenting the governorship candidate to his people, the Deputy State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Azua Ashongo, recalled that it had been 46 years since Kwande last produced a governor. He explained that the PDP, under the leadership of Chief Samuel Ortom, considered it appropriate to zone the party's 2027 governorship ticket to Kwande in recognition of the area's longstanding aspiration.

Hon. Ashongo urged the people to take ownership of the project, emphasising that Aondoakaa's ambition should not be regarded merely as a political party affair but as a collective community project requiring the commitment and support of all.

He subsequently entrusted the governorship project to the elders of Kwande and Ushongo, urging them to provide the necessary guidance, prayers and support to ensure its success.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Ushongo, Engr. Peter Ashiekaa expressed gratitude to their brothers and sisters in Kwande for the show of solidarity and unity.

He assured the gathering that the people of Ushongo would stand firmly behind Aondoakaa, expressing confidence that he would not disappoint Kwande or the people of Benue State if elected governor. He, however, urged the candidate to always remember the aspirations and development needs of Kwande.

In his remarks, the President of KUPO, Comrade Aloko Nachi, declared the organisation's full support for Aondoakaa, describing him as a son of KUPO and a candidate whose aspiration had united the people of Kwande and Ushongo.

He affirmed that the people were united in their resolve to support Aondoakaa's ambition and called for sustained cooperation among the various communities to achieve their collective goal.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional elders, the leader of the IKyurav Supreme Council, Elder Ikyem Ayoosu Nathaniel, expressed pride in Aondoakaa and declared the elders' readiness to support his governorship ambition.

He cautioned against any suggestion that Kwande was divided over the candidature, stressing that the people had put aside differences and united behind their son, irrespective of the part of Kwande from which he originated.

Elder Ayoosu maintained that the prayers and aspirations of the people had been answered and formally bestowed the blessings of the Kwande nation on Aondoakaa, urging him to go forth with confidence and pursue what he described as a just cause.

Responding, Aondoakaa expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming show of love, solidarity and support from the people of Kwande and Ushongo.

He described the gathering as a humbling experience and acknowledged the significance of the confidence reposed in him by the elders, community leaders and stakeholders.

The former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice stated that his ambition was driven by a commitment to serve the people and advance the collective interests of Benue State.

He explained that if a fellow aspirant from Kwande Mbarakuu had emerged as the candidate, he would have willingly stepped aside to support him. However, having emerged as the PDP's flag bearer, he said he was determined to pursue the opportunity presented to their people and would not retreat from the responsibility entrusted to him.

Aondoakaa assured the elders that he would not betray their confidence or disappoint the people if elected governor.

He also highlighted some of his development priorities, including the proposed opening of a strategic trade route connecting Kwande to the Douala Port in Cameroon. According to him, the initiative would create new economic opportunities, strengthen cross-border trade and position Kwande and Benue State as a major commercial hub serving Northern Nigeria.

The governorship candidate further appealed to the elders and people of Kwande to extend the same support to other PDP candidates from the area, particularly the party's Benue North-East Senatorial Candidate, Hon. Thomas Tyolumun Unongo; the Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency candidate, Hon. Moses Mkeenem; and all PDP candidates contesting for seats in the Benue State House of Assembly from the area.

He stressed that the success of the various candidates would be enhanced by unity, cooperation and a shared commitment to the development of Kwande and Benue State.

Aondoakaa urged the people to work together as a team, noting that a united front would strengthen their collective voice and improve their capacity to attract development to their communities.

The meeting brought together elders and community leaders from Nanev, IKyurav, Shangev and Turan clans of Kwande, as well as Mata and Mbagwa of Ushongo Local Government Area.

Aondoakaa was accompanied by his mother, Mama Veronica Aondoakaa; the Benue North-East Senatorial Candidate, Hon. Thomas Tyolumun Unongo, who was represented by Hon. Chief Emma Viashima; Dr. Tersoo Loko former BSIEC boss, the former Majority leader of the State House of Assembly Hon. Thomas Dugeri and the PDP candidates for the Benue State House of Assembly representing Mata and Mbagwa, Hon. Bemgba Iortyom and Hon. Bemson Agugu, respectively. Other stakeholders, community leaders and elders from Ushongo were also present at the gathering.

UNDER ALIA, OVERHEAD COSTS EXCEED PERSONNEL COSTS — AONDOAKAA

The Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN has proposed a significant reduction in overhead expenditure as one of the ways for the State Government to free up funds for greater development and also debt repayment.

According to him, based on the Governor Hyacinth Alia’s audited accounts up to 2025 and budget implementation figures up to June 2026, the governor received over ₦1.1 trillion in three years.

The former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice who was a guest on Channels Television programme ‘Political Paradigm’ on Tuesday evening, said however that while personnel costs stood at over ₦187 billion, overhead costs amounted to over ₦193 billion.

“Does it make sense? You can cut down that overhead cost to even ₦60 billion and channel the savings into paying off those debts. Why should overhead costs be higher than personnel costs? Does that make sense anywhere in the world?” he asked.

Chief Aondoakaa argued that personnel costs cover salaries and other employee-related expenses, while overhead costs include government travel, feeding and other administrative expenditures. He questioned why these administrative expenses should exceed the personnel costs of the entire civil service.

He maintained that if the government could reduce overhead costs to a reasonable level within one year, the savings could be channelled towards addressing more pressing issues.

“For instance, if you reduce your overhead costs to ₦100 billion, you would have over ₦90 billion available to begin paying off debts. Over four years, you should be able to bring down the debt portfolio gradually,” he said.

Aondoakaa also called for a comprehensive audit of government overhead expenditure, particularly utility bills and other administrative expenses, to identify waste and eliminate excesses.

He stressed that the money saved from such a review could be redirected towards debt repayment rather than allowing the state’s debt burden to continue growing.

“It is better to pay off debt so that we don’t push our people into debts,” he said.

Chief Aondoakaa further advocated an audit of the state’s debt portfolio to establish the authenticity of outstanding obligations and determine whether any claims had been inflated or were unsupported.

“Government has an obligation to honour all debts, but it has no obligation to honour debts that are not correct,” he said.

Citing the Federal Government’s debt-verification exercises, Aondoakaa argued that questionable claims should be investigated before payment, while genuine and verified debts must be honoured in accordance with the law.

He emphasised that government is a continuum and that legitimate debts accumulated by previous administrations remain obligations of the state.

Aondoakaa identified improved revenue generation as another important measure for addressing Benue State’s financial challenges.

He also expressed solidarity with the families of those who are still missing, noting that the uncertainty surrounding the fate of loved ones is an emotional burden no family should have to bear.

Chief Aondoakaa commended the local divers, volunteers, emergency responders and community members who have been involved in the search and rescue efforts since the incident occurred. He urged them not to relent until every missing person is found.

He further called on the Benue State Government and relevant emergency agencies to provide immediate support and assistance to the affected families, many of whom may now be faced with trauma, arising from the tragedy.

While mourning the victims, Chief Aondoakaa stressed that the incident once again highlights the urgent need for improved safety standards on the state’s waterways. He advocated stricter enforcement of safety regulations, greater public awareness on water transportation safety, and increased investment in infrastructure that would reduce the risks faced daily by riverine communities.

“At this difficult time, the people of Buruku are not alone. We all share in their grief. We must stand together to support the bereaved families and pray for those still missing. May God grant eternal rest to the departed and comfort all who mourn them,” he added.
