NSMVAA COMMENCED SERIES OF TARGETED NIGHT ENFORCEMENT OPERATIONS ACROSS MINNA CITY.
The Niger State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (NSMVAA) has last night commenced a series of targeted night enforcement operations across the city. The initiative, which began this week, aims to crack down on vehicles and tricycles operating with only one functional headlight or with faulty lighting systems.
According to a statement from the Agency’s Executive Director, Engr. Dr. M.D. Bako, FNSE, the operation is a dual-pronged approach combining strict enforcement with public sensitization. While offending drivers are being apprehended and fined, officers are also taking the time to educate motorists on the significant dangers posed by faulty lights.
"Driving at night with a single or dim headlight drastically reduces visibility for both the driver and oncoming traffic," the statement read. "This creates a high-risk scenario for head-on collisions, side-swipes, and accidents involving pedestrians who become virtually invisible until it is too late."
The NSMVAA emphasized that a vehicle with one headlight can be mistakenly perceived by other drivers as a motorcycle from a distance, leading to miscalculations in passing and spacing. Faulty tail lights and brake lights also contribute to rear-end collisions.
The Agency has urged all motorists to perform routine checks on their vehicles' lighting systems, including headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and indicators, before embarking on night journeys. They have warned that the enforcement drive will be sustained to ensure compliance and improve overall road safety.
