The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines child abuse/maltreatment as “all forms of physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential arm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power. Child abuse prevents children from developing emotionally and economically and ultimately impacts negatively on the economy as a whole. Child abuse according to research also becomes “cyclical” as children who suffer abuse often grow to abuse others and as well as their partners.
