HISTORY

Chief Toby (also known as Toby the Hero or Atuwokiki) was one of the prominent founding figures and chiefs who accompanied King Jaja during this migration in 1869.

Born into the war canoe house system (likely in the Bonny/Ibani context), he was a key ally and warrior in Jaja's group. He played a crucial role in organizing the new settlement, defending it, and engaging in trade and political affairs during the late 19th century.

Chief Toby headed or founded what became known as the Toby House (sometimes linked to or associated with the Owujie/Owujighe Dynasty in some accounts).

This house was one of the war canoe houses integrated into Opobo's structure under the broader Jaja group or Opuwari (main royal house established by King Jaja).

Toby House traders notably controlled key trade routes (e.g., Owerrinta, Abayi, Umuakpara Aro Ngwa), contributing to Opobo's economic dominance in palm oil trade.

The Toby lineage/dynasty thus originated as part of the post-1869 settlement houses in Opobo:It emerged from the Bonny-derived Ibani-Ijo traditions and war canoe system.

Chief Toby himself is celebrated as a "founding father" and hero for his bravery (including legendary acts like single-handedly killing an elephant in some oral traditions) and contributions to Opobo's establishment and defense.

Descendants of Toby House continued to hold influence in Opobo's chieftaincy, land holdings (e.g., areas like Iwokiri, Iwoma Atuokiki).

DID YOU KNOW?

The popular places in Port-Harcourt called 1st & 2nd Artillery are originally known as Rumuogba & Rumuibekwe Junctions.

During the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, the Nigerian Military stationed two Artilleries, one at Rumuogba and the other one at Rumuibekwe.

After the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, both junctions became known as Artillery junction.

The interesting part about it is, when you are going to any of the junctions today, 1st or 2nd Artillery depends on which side you are coming from.

If you are coming from Rumuola, 1st Artillery is the Rumuogba junction and 2nd Artillery is the Rumuibekwe junction.

If you are coming from Rumuokwurusi (Eleme junction), 1st Artillery is the Rumuibekwe junction and 2nd Artillery is the Rumuogba junction.
