Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti on Tuesday, inaugurated the Abia State Council on Nutrition to implement the Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative of the Federal Government in Abia State.

Inaugurating the Council which is constituted to provide overall leadership, policy direction, coordination and oversight for the effective implementation and sustainability of nutritional activities across the State in line with the policy directives of the Federal Government N774. Governor Otti said that the initiative is a welcomed development.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu says women who give birth in government health facilities in the southeast state will get N500 and a delivery pack.

According to him, the move became important since access to quality healthcare is not cheap.

“Abia State has keyed into the basic health insurance for pregnant women. If you put to bed in any of our primary healthcare centres, you get N500,” the governor told Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

“Delivery is free; they give you a delivery pack and they give N500 which is running for the vulnerable members of the society.”

Statistics shows that HIV prevalence in South East is above national average

The southeast geo-political zone has a national Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence rate of 1.9, which is above the national average of 1.4.

At the commissioning of the southeast Zonal Office of the National Agency for Control of AIDS (NACA) in Umuahia, Abia State, yesterday, it was disclosed that out of about 10,000 persons living with the virus, less than 2,000 avails themselves of the retroviral drugs that are said to be available and affordable.
