Professor Afaha brings to this historic assignment a wealth of academic, administrative and leadership experience accumulated over decades. A distinguished Professor of History, he is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Abuja and has contributed extensively to teaching, research, academic assessment and the supervision of doctoral students.

Beyond the university system, Professor Afaha has also served as Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy to the Governor of Edo State and as a Visiting Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His breadth of experience and proven record of academic leadership make his appointment particularly significant for the new institution dedicated to advancing teacher education and human capital development.

FAKE NECO REPORT: WHAT DOES PREMIUM TIMES REALLY WANT?

The Uyo Senatorial District Media Professionals Forum (USDMPF) has taken note of Premium Times' report ranking Akwa Ibom 36th in the 2026 NECO Senior School Certificate Examination. We ask plainly: is Premium Times a legitimate news channel or a fake news channel? A newspaper that parades a disputed and incomplete data set as the final verdict on an entire state's education system is not practising investigative journalism. It is practising mercenary and gutter journalism, and that is being polite.

The Akwa Ibom State Government says results from 83 of the 214 public-school examination centres are still outstanding. Yet Premium Times rushed out a ranking, declared that the state had "crashed" and moved on. Did NECO certify those figures as final? Were the 83 centres included, excluded or quietly ignored? The newspaper owes the public its methodology. Until it provides one, its headline is a verdict without evidence.

A state's education record is also bigger than one table. Governor Umo Eno has reported the recruitment of 3,000 teachers, the disbursement of ₦1.69 billion in student bursaries, and the construction of model primary schools across the 31 Local Government Areas. In July 2026, ₦1.968 billion was approved for examination fees, as reported by Channels Television, The Guardian, Punch and the Voice of Nigeria. A further 2,000 teaching and SUBEB personnel were approved, alongside a ₦1.1 billion wardrobe allowance for 20,345 teachers. These are public-record facts, and Premium Times, conveniently, could not find room for any of them.

The way we see it, Premium Times has shown a troubling appetite for damaging stories about Akwa Ibom and a striking reluctance to verify, correct or contextualise them. At some point, a pattern stops being a coincidence and starts being an agenda.

So we ask the question Premium Times must answer: is this journalism, or a paid hatchet job dressed up as journalism? Who benefits from a narrative of collapse before the evidence is in? If the newspaper is confident of its work, let it publish its methodology and NECO's confirmation without delay. If it cannot, it owes Akwa Ibom a correction and an apology. The people deserve facts and the students deserve fairness.
Journalism is meant to establish facts before passing judgement, and Premium Times has done the reverse.

Clement Warrie

Beyond the physical structure, it represents an investment in the potential of young people and in creating an enabling environment for learning, creativity and enterprise.

The Etim Ekpo centre is part of the broader establishment of Youth Development Centres across the 31 Local Government Areas, reflecting the administration's focus on equipping young people with relevant skills and opportunities to participate meaningfully in the economy.

The Chairman’s Residence forms part of the State Government’s provision of official residences across the 31 Local Government Areas, supporting the requirement for council chairmen to reside within their respective domains and remain closer to the people they serve.

The Sports Festival, on the other hand, provided a platform for young athletes from across the state to compete, showcase their talents and celebrate sporting excellence. A total of 727 medals were won by athletes from 28 of the 31 Local Government Areas, with Itu retaining the top position on the medals table.

Together, the two events highlighted different aspects of grassroots development, bringing governance closer to the people while creating platforms for young people to discover, develop and demonstrate their talents.

INVESTING IN THE YOUTHS, BUILDING THE FUTURE

Yesterday, 26 September 2026, Governor Umo Eno commissioned the ARISE Youth Development Centre in Uruan Local Government Area, marking Day Twenty-Six of the 39-project commissioning series in celebration of Akwa Ibom at 39.

The Uruan centre is the sixth of the 31 Youth Development Centres being delivered across the state to provide young people with platforms for skills development, entrepreneurship, creativity and youth empowerment.

The centre provides an environment where young people can acquire practical knowledge, develop their capabilities and explore opportunities that can translate into sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond the physical structure, the centre represents an investment in the potential of Uruan’s young people, creating space for learning, innovation, enterprise and meaningful engagement.

The rollout of these centres across the 31 Local Government Areas reflects the focus of Gov. Umo Eno on equipping young people with the skills and opportunities to participate meaningfully in the economy and contribute to the future of the state.

Day Twenty-Six therefore adds another important dimension to the Gratitude Month series: creating spaces where young people can learn, develop their talents and turn potential into opportunity.

GRATITUDE MONTH
— DAY TWENTY-FIVE

BRINGING GOVERNANCE CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE

Yesterday, 25 September 2026, Governor Umo Eno commissioned the Official Chairman’s Residence in Essien Udim Local Government Area, marking Day Twenty-Five of the 39-project commissioning series in celebration of Akwa Ibom at 39.

The residence is part of the State Government’s provision to facilitate the implementation of the requirement that Local Government Chairmen reside within their respective domains. The objective is straightforward; leadership should live among the people it serves, experience their realities firsthand and respond more quickly to their needs.

By being resident within their LGAs, Chairmen are better positioned to directly observe local challenges, engage with residents and identify infrastructure and other needs requiring attention.

The Chairman’s Residence project is being replicated across all 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State, providing the physical infrastructure required to support closer and more responsive grassroots administration.

Day twenty five highlights another dimension of development, bringing governance closer to the people by ensuring that local leadership is physically present within the areas it is mandated to serve.

— DAY TWENTY-FOUR

A STRONGER FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION

Yesterday, 24 September 2026, Governor Umo Eno commissioned the Model Primary School in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, marking Day Twenty-Four of the 39-project commissioning series in celebration of Akwa Ibom at 39.

The school represents another investment in quality basic education and the learning environment of children, providing pupils with a modern and conducive space to learn, develop and build the foundation for their future.

The commissioning also reflects the broader focus on strengthening basic education through the provision of improved school infrastructure across the state. A quality learning environment can enhance teaching and learning while giving children the facilities needed to develop their potential.

From healthcare facilities and roads to youth development centres and now another Model Primary School, the Gratitude Month series continues to capture different dimensions of public infrastructure and human development.

Day Twenty-Four is another reminder that building the future begins with giving children the right foundation to learn, grow and thrive.

GRATITUDE MONTH
— DAY TWENTY-TWO

STRENGTHENING URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE IN IKOT EKPENE

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, Governor Umo Eno commissioned the 4.12km GRA internal road network in Ikot Ekpene, with outfall drainage and additional erosion reclamation works, marking Day Twenty-Two of the 39-project commissioning series in celebration of Akwa Ibom at 39.

The project combines road infrastructure, drainage and erosion control to improve mobility, manage stormwater and strengthen the environmental resilience of the GRA.

The commissioning was particularly special with Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, as Special Guest of Honour. In his remarks, Akpabio commended the development strides in the state, describing Akwa Ibom as a “destination of choice for tourists and investors” and citing major infrastructure projects as evidence of the state’s changing profile.

Day Twenty-Two therefore adds another important infrastructure milestone to the Gratitude Month series, combining better roads, effective drainage and erosion control to create a more functional and resilient urban environment in Ikot Ekpene.
