The Akwa Ibom State Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Committee and The Akwa Ibom State Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Department joins in the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2026.

This year’s theme: “End child marriage and invest in girls' rights” emphasizes on raising global awareness and urging urgent action to stop child marriage, keep girls in school, expand access to health and protection services, and support girl-led leadership.

Today as we celebrate this occasion, we want to stand firm in our belief and efforts as a state to make sure that all our girls are protected and treated with equal respect.

We are delighted to share that our able Director of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Department and the Secretary of the Akwa Ibom Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Management Committee, Barr. Emem Ette have successfully defended and completed her PhD! 🎓

“For my doctoral research, I undertook An Appraisal of the Legal Framework for Combatting Human Trafficking in Nigeria, a subject that sits at the heart of my work as Director, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response Department, Ministry of Justice, Akwa Ibom State.

Having seen firsthand how trafficking victims fall through the cracks of our legal and institutional systems, I wanted my research to interrogate where the gaps are, what is working, and how we can build a more victim-centered and effective framework for combatting this crime in Nigeria.

This journey stretched me in every way, and I am deeply grateful to my supervisor, Prof. MOJISOLA ESEYIN for her exceptional guidance, patience, and scholarly insight.

Thank you to my family and all who supported me through this process.

This is more than a degree, it is a renewed commitment to ensure that our laws do not just exist on paper, but truly protect and deliver justice to victims 🙏🏽”

Re-introducing Barr. Emem Gabriel Ette PhD Emem Ette 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Congratulations Ma’am.

*Know the Law - Indecent Exposure*

Indecent exposure is an offence under the VAPP Law. Any person who deliberately exposes their private parts, or forces another person, especially children, to touch them, has committed a crime. This act causes trauma, and long-term emotional damage to victims. The law is clear: perpetrators will be sentenced to 1 year imprisonment.

Akwa Ibom must be a safe space for every child and adult. If you witness indecent exposure or it is happening to you, speak up. Silence protects the offender, but your voice protects the next victim. To report contact us on *09169009111* or visit Room 8, Ministry of Justice, State Secretariat, Uyo

*Day 2: Know the Law - Economic Abuse is GBV*

Do you know that stopping someone from working, refusing to give them money for food, rent, school fees, or other basic needs, and making them depend on you completely is a crime under the Akwa Ibom State VAPP Law? This is called economic abuse. It’s not just about beating — control through money is violence too. When you deliberately cut off someone’s financial independence and refuse to provide, you cause stress, shame, and helplessness. The law is clear: perpetrators risk 2 years imprisonment. Everyone deserves the freedom to earn, decide, and live with dignity.

*Independence is a Right, Not a Privilege*
A healthy relationship or family supports growth, not control. Whether it’s a spouse, partner, parent, or guardian, no one should use money to trap another person. If you’re experiencing this, or you see it happening, speak up. Economic abuse destroys confidence and keeps people stuck in harmful situations. The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice is here to help with counseling, mediation, and legal action. Call *09169009111*, or visit Room 8, Ministry of Justice, State Secretariat, Uyo.

No human being has the right to violate another person’s body. Sexual violence is a grave harm — it strips dignity and leaves survivors reliving trauma long after the act, with healing that is often slow and uncertain.

The VAPP Law 2020 is clear: r**e is a serious crime and attracts life imprisonment. This law exists to protect every person in Akwa Ibom State and hold offenders accountable.

Desist from committing r**e. Respect consent. Stop sexual violence.
If you are struggling with anger, power, or harmful thoughts, seek help now — before you destroy a life and your own future.
