We got a report this morning about these two girls that were brought in from Enugu state to Bayelsa state under the guise of coming here to work in a restaurant, unknown to them they were being brought in as s*x workers to work in a brothel around Tombia axis. After refusal to join other girls for their first outing, they sneaked out of the environment at about 3am and were found by a good Samaritan one Mr Solomon who contacted the Gender Based Violence and Child Right office and made the report. A complaint has been logged at relevant quarters and efforts are being made to contact the family of the victims. Hopefully the girls will be returned safely and the matter followed accordingly.

The Gender Based Violence (GBV) Desk Office was officially launched by the Solicitor General/ Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice on the 8th of July 2020 as a Unit to address Gender based issues that affects both women and men in our state. The unit is to be headed by Mrs Pere Egbuson, a Gender Champion who shall be the Director of the unit alongside other seasoned lawyers. This initiative was borne out of the sudden rise in violence against persons and the upsurge in r**e cases in recent times. Thus following the rally held by Fida Bayelsa sometimes in May and the call at the Solicitor General's office who promised to look into the matter. To this end two Toll Free lines were acquired by the Ministry to attend to distress calls on violence from the public by the GBV unit. It is hoped that with this development, the issue of GBV would be reduced to the bearest minimum and justice served on the perpetrators. The Toll free numbers are MTN line, 08031230629 open to all networks and 09029972627 open to only Airtel users.
