With less than 47 days to the conduct of the Bayelsa 2019 governorship elections, security agencies, traditional institutions, and political parties reached a consensus to build a synergy of action to mitigate any form of violence against women in the lead up to the election. Girl Child Empowerment and Reproductive Health Initiative (GREP) during the week, organized a dialogue to secure the commitment of security agencies and political parties on strategies to mitigate violence and protect women during the election. During the meeting, Mr. Eneyi Ziduoya, state chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) commit that political parties will adhere to both security and INEC guideline for the election, to do this IPAC said it will further engage 45 political parties who are fielding candidates in the election to take actions that will stop all forms of violence against women who are participating in political and electioneering activities in the state. GREP stated that it has received cases of violence against women already in the state and is currently providing referral and psychosocial support to women through its toll-free hotlines. The Police political desk will also help in coordinating and providing a response to violence ahead of the election among other things, while traditional institutions will provide an avenue for more community-based sensitizations across the state and play a major role to escalate cases of violence in their communities. The dialogue was organized with support from the National Democratic Institute (NDI)
