Oral history suggests that Maypole was first danced on the Corn Islands atop Mount Pleasant Hill by enslaved Africans during the period of British settlement on the islands. The celebration took place around a large tree with yellow flowers and blended African cultural heritage with adaptations of the European Maypole traditions observed throughout the Caribbean at the time.

Today, 1 May, marks three years since the launch of The Corn Islands Virtual Library website and social media platforms, a significant milestone following the project’s foundation on 19 August 2021.

Through the Virtual Library and its Virtual Museum, we have been able to archive, protect, and promote the historical memory, heritage, and culture of the Corn Islands of Caribbean Nicaragua.

Our gratitude to all who have contributed to safeguarding our identity and promoting our heritage.

The Corn Islands’ local team is currently in Waspam, representing the islands in the 75th Nicaraguan Caribbean Baseball Series.

Since the beginning of the series, the islands have secured a total of 10 championship titles, and in recent years have maintained an outstanding record, remaining undefeated for five consecutive tournaments.

This achievement reflects the discipline, commitment, and enduring baseball tradition of the Corn Islands.
