Je zou graag vloeiend en met overtuiging in het Engels communiceren…..


Maar …..Ik kom niet uit mijn woorden!

Ik hoor dit van veel mensen die ontevreden zijn over de moeilijkheden die ze ondervinden bij het communiceren in het Engels. Je weet wat je wilt zeggen, maar je kunt de ‘juiste’ woorden niet vinden om jezelf uit te drukken.

Of misschien weet je op de een of andere manier dat de woordvolgorde niet klopt. Of je bent niet zeker van je uitspraak.
Je zou graag vloeiend en met zelfvertrouwen willen spreken, maar hoe bereik je dit doel?

Helpt het om nog een standaard cursus Engels te volgen? Misschien. Maar er is een verschil tussen weten en doen. Een Chinese student vertelde me eens dat hij op school veel over Engels had geleerd, maar niet de vaardigheid had verworven om in het Engels te communiceren. Hij begreep de taalpatronen, maar kon ze niet in het dagelijks leven gebruiken.

Hoe leer je dan vloeiend en met zelfvertrouwen spreken?
Nou, je begint met het trainen van je luistervaardigheid. Enkele jaren geleden had ik een student die hulp vroeg bij zijn schrijfvaardigheid, omdat hij moest slagen voor een IELTS-examen om naar Australië te kunnen emigreren. Ik was verbaasd over hoe goed hij Engels sprak en vroeg hem hoe hij zijn spreekvaardigheid had ontwikkeld. Hij vertelde me dat hij dyslectisch was en de ondertitels bij films niet snel genoeg kon lezen, dus moest hij zich gewoon concentreren op luisteren. Van luisteren ging hij verder naar spreken.

Het maakt niet echt uit waar je naar luistert. Het helpt echter wel als je geniet van wat je luistert, of het nu liedjes, verhalen, films of podcasts zijn.

But….I can’t find the right words!

I hear this from many people who are unhappy about the difficulties they face when communicating in English. You know what you want to say but you cannot find the “right” words to express yourself. Or perhaps you somehow know that the word order is doesn’t quite work. Or you are not sure about your pronunciation.

You would love to speak fluently and with confidence, but how are you to achieve this goal?

Will taking yet another standard English course help? Perhaps. But there is a difference between knowing and doing. A Chinese student once told me that at school he had learned a lot about English but had not acquired the skill of communicating in English. He understood the language patterns but could not use them in real time.

So how do you learn to speak fluently and with confidence?
Well, you start by training your listening skills. Some years ago, I had a student who asked for help with his writing skills because he needed to pass an IELTS exam so that he could emigrate to Australia. I was amazed at how well he spoke English and asked how he had developed his speaking skills. He told me he was dyslectic and could not read the subtitles on films fast enough so he simply had to learn to focus on listening. From listening he progressed to speaking.

It doesn’t really matter what you listen to. However, it helps a lot if you enjoy what you are listening to, whether it be songs, stories, films, podcasts.
