On Thursday 17 September at 18:00 CEST, join the virtual event Preparing Museums for a Crisis: Lessons from Ukraine. Museum and cultural professionals and heritage experts will discuss an urgent question: how can we protect and preserve cultural heritage in times of crisis?

The event is hosted by The Peale Museum in Baltimore, USA, in collaboration with the Odesa and Rotterdam committees of Baltimore Sister Cities, and is made possible with the support of DutchCulture.

In our podcast series Back Fire: Stories of Cultural Counterforce, Ukrainian and Dutch artists and cultural professionals share their experiences of creating and working in times of war.

We speak with curator, artist and researcher Asia Tsisar; Ukrainian-Rotterdam architect Oksana Savchuk; Dutch artist, designer and cultural strategist Marjo van Schaik; and Anastasiia Manuliak, curator and Head of Visual Arts at the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv.

And there is a new series on the way, for which we travel to Ukraine ourselves. Powerful personal stories intertwine with music as we meet artists, people from underground scenes and military personnel, while chance encounters add unexpected voices along the way. Through these conversations and encounters, we explore what art and culture, and music in particular, mean in such extreme times.

Listen to Back Fire via the link in bio and stay tuned for the new series.

๐ŸคToday, we welcomed VVD Member of Parliament Nicole Maes to DutchCulture. We greatly value that international cultural cooperation is part of her portfolio and that she took the time to discuss why it matters.

Representing partners in the International Cultural Policy, Jelle Burggraaff (DutchCulture), Sanne Letschert (Cultural Emergency Response (CER) ) and Tessa Giller (Prince Claus Fund spoke with her about the value and impact of international cultural cooperation for the Netherlands.

At a time when international relations are under pressure, connection matters more than ever. Culture opens doors, brings people and perspectives together, and builds lasting international relationships.

This cooperation also has economic value. International cultural activities support the livelihoods of makers and cultural organisations from the Netherlands, provide access to new markets and networks, and make a significant contribution to the Dutch economy.

Yet funding for the Netherlandsโ€™ international cultural policy is under pressure. Together, we are calling for a strong, future-proof policy that continues to invest in the social, diplomatic and economic value of international cultural cooperation.

Thank you, Nicole Maes, for the open, thoughtful and engaged conversation!

Just as Raki Nikahetiya, co-founder and director of sฤ Ladakh Biennale points out, cultural collaboration works in a similar nature. Bringing creativity into a new context requires navigating the unknown, where engaging directly with your surroundings is what cultivates collective creation and mutual understanding.

โ€œIn working with this immensely rich repertoire from the Low Countriesโ€™ musical Golden Age, we are constantly reminded that music has always been a breeding ground for international collaboration and cultural exchange. These ancient musical manuscripts with which we work so closely bear witness to a vibrant network of composers, singers, patrons, and institutions whose ideas travelled freely across political and linguistic boundaries.โ€ย

โ€œAs a truly international ensemble, we at Ca****la Pratensis feel immensely fortunate to have devoted almost forty years to this remarkable repertoire, sharing our unique approach with audiences, students, and fellow musicians in concert halls and classrooms around the world. We hope that this project continues to inspire new generations of performers and listeners to engage with this extraordinary musical heritage.โ€ย

From Albania to Zimbabwe and from Antwerp to New York

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธOur new DutchCulture Database Mapping 2025 shows how cultural and creative professionals from or based in the Kingdom of the Netherlands worked across the world.

In 2025, we tracked more than 19,000 international projects in almost 3,000 cities and 117 countries. This is comparable to 2019, our last record year.

Behind every number is a maker, a partner, a stage, a residency, a book, a screening, an exhibition or a new connection. ๐Ÿค
