From wildfire to forest regeneration 🌳
Three years after the 2023 wildfires, the TUI Care Foundation is launching TUI Forest Rhodes together with local environmental organisation Gia Ti Fisi, as part of the Rhodes Co-Lab initiative.
Over the next three years, the project is set to carry out restoration activities across 80,000 m² of land and plant more than 3,000 trees, alongside soil management, irrigation and fire-prevention measures. A new nature trail and Education and Information Centre will give residents, students and visitors the opportunity to learn more about the island’s ecosystems and the restoration work taking place.
And the first volunteers have already got involved. 👏
On 16 October, 25 volunteers from Marella Discovery joined a tree-planting day at the project site. For 1st Electrical Officer Rowie Presado, taking part felt personal: the crew visits Rhodes regularly and had seen the effects of the wildfires themselves.
Environmental Officer Andrei Matei described the highlight of the day as planting the very first sapling, with “lots of smiles” and “a genuine feeling that we were doing something meaningful together.” He explained his reason for joining simply: “To give back to an island that gives so much to our guests and crew.”
Around 1,500 volunteers are expected to take part over the next three years. 🌳
